🟦 BOAT BATTERY SEMINAR (Wrap-Up Post)

🎣 Spring Fishing Season Is Here — Don’t Get Stuck at the Ramp

We’ve spent the last couple posts breaking down Lead Acid vs AGM vs Lithium and how to size your battery system correctly…

Now here’s the bottom line:

⚡ Most trolling motor and electronics issues we see in the spring are battery-related.
Weak batteries, bad connections, corroded wiring, incorrect chargers, and undersized systems will ruin a fishing trip fast.

Before you hit the water this spring, let us check your setup and make sure everything is ready.

🔧 Alabama Trolling Motors Spring System Check Includes:

✅ Battery testing
✅ Charger testing
✅ Wiring inspection
✅ Trolling motor performance check
✅ Breaker/fuse inspection (ABYC compliant)
✅ Terminal cleaning & connection check
✅ Voltage drop diagnosis (electronics + trolling motor)

🚨 If your graphs flicker…
🚨 If your trolling motor feels weak…
🚨 If your batteries are 3+ years old…
🚨 If your charger doesn’t fully charge…

It’s time to get it checked out before tournament season and weekend traffic hits full swing.

🟦 BOAT BATTERY SEMINAR (Part 4 of 4)

⚡ How to Choose the Correct Battery Size (Amp Load Made Simple)

A battery can be brand new and still be the wrong battery for your boat.

Here’s the simple way to size it:

✅ Amp Hours Needed = Amps × Hours

Example:

Graph pulls 3 amps × 8 hours = 24Ah

Livewell pulls 4 amps × 5 hours = 20Ah

Accessories pull 3 amps × 2 hours = 6Ah

That’s already 50Ah just in electronics.

Most boats need WAY more battery than people think.

⚠️ Also remember:

Not all battery types give you the same usable power.

🔋 Lead Acid = about 50% usable
🔋 AGM = about 60–70% usable
🔋 Lithium = about 90% usable

That’s why lithium “100Ah” feels like it lasts twice as long.

📍 Want us to size your battery setup correctly and make sure it meets Mercury cranking requirements and ABYC standards? Bring it by the shop.

🟦 BOAT BATTERY SEMINAR (Part 3 of 4)

⚡ Lithium Batteries: Why They Feel Like a Cheat Code

Lithium (LiFePO4) batteries are the #1 upgrade we install for anglers who want maximum runtime and consistent trolling motor power.

Here’s why:

✅ Lithium Advantages:

✔ Holds voltage steady all day
✔ Much lighter than lead acid or AGM
✔ More usable capacity
✔ Longer lifespan
✔ Faster charging

What that means on the water:

🎣 your trolling motor stays strong at 4 PM
📡 your electronics stay stable
💪 less strain on your system overall

⚠️ IMPORTANT:
Lithium must be paired with the correct charger settings and installed properly to meet ABYC safety guidelines. Also, not every lithium battery is designed to crank an outboard.

If you want lithium done right, it matters who installs it.

📍 We install and rig lithium systems the correct way.

🟦 BOAT BATTERY SEMINAR (Part 2 of 4)

🔋 AGM Batteries: The Best All-Around Option for Most Boats

If you want a battery that cranks strong, handles vibration, and powers electronics better than standard lead acid…

AGM is usually the best bang for the buck.

Why AGM is popular in bass boats:

✅ Sealed (no acid spills)
✅ Maintenance-free
✅ Strong starting power
✅ Better voltage stability for graphs and pumps
✅ Charges faster than flooded batteries

The big benefit:

AGM holds voltage better under load, which means:
🎯 fewer graph glitches
🎯 better pump performance
🎯 stronger trolling motor output

⚠️ Just remember: AGM still isn’t meant to be drained completely like lithium.

📍 If you’re running multiple graphs, LiveScope, and accessories, AGM is a great upgrade.

🟦 BOAT BATTERY SEMINAR (Part 1 of 4)

🔋 Flooded Lead Acid Batteries: Cheap Up Front, Costly Later?

Flooded lead acid batteries are the most common marine batteries because they’re affordable and easy to find.

But here’s what most people don’t realize…

⚠️ Lead acid batteries lose performance fast when:

they sit all winter

they’re not fully charged

they’re discharged too deep

terminals corrode

✅ Pros:

✔ Lowest upfront cost
✔ Works fine for light use

❌ Cons:

❌ Voltage drops faster under load
❌ Doesn’t like deep discharge
❌ Shorter lifespan
❌ Requires proper venting and mounting (ABYC safety standards)

🎣 If you fish hard, run current, or stay on the trolling motor all day… lead acid may leave you frustrated halfway through the day.

📍 Need help choosing the right battery setup? We can test your system and recommend the correct upgrade.

🎣 Spring fishing season is almost here! As we wrap up hunting season and head into fishing season, now is the time to get your boat, trolling motor, and battery system checked out before the first big trip.

At Alabama Trolling Motors, one of the biggest issues we see every year is customers running the wrong batteries or not enough battery capacity for their setup.

So let’s break it down quick:

🔋 Lead Acid vs AGM vs Lithium (Boat Battery Basics)
⚡ Flooded Lead Acid (Standard Battery)

✅ Cheapest option
❌ Shorter lifespan, voltage drops faster, needs maintenance

⚡ AGM (Sealed Lead Acid)

✅ Strong cranking power, great for electronics, maintenance-free
❌ Costs more than lead acid

⚡ Lithium (LiFePO4)

✅ Long runtime, lighter weight, steady power all day
❌ Must be paired with the correct charger + proper installation

🔥 Quick Tip:

A lot of batteries “look fine” until you hit the water and the voltage drops under load. That’s when graphs start glitching and trolling motors lose power.

If you’re running multiple graphs, LiveScope, pumps, and a trolling motor… your battery setup matters more than ever.

📍 If you want us to check your battery system and make sure it meets ABYC safety standards and Mercury Marine cranking requirements, bring it by the shop.
