For our Piper owners:

AD 2013-02-13 (Stabilator control system)

This AD has an effective date of 03-11-13. Required compliance for aircraft more than 15yrs of age was at the next annual inspection or 12 months after the effective date. The reoccurring inspection interval is 7yrs or 2000hrs. Most of the affected aircraft will be due again in 2020 or 2021. It is our opinion that our Piper owners address this AD immediately and not wait. Loss of elevator control during flight is often catastrophic or fatal.

We recently had a local PA28 experience this loss while performing stall recovery during a flight review. The subject aircraft was not due for this compliance until next year.

In Lynn’s opinion, what you see in the below magnified photo absolutely COULD be missed during an Annual/100hr. It requires disassembly of the control cables, a thorough cleaning, and inspection with at least a 10x magnifying glass. This is the beginning stages of pitting corrosion which will very quickly lead to crack propegation, separation of the control cable, and loss of elevator control. This aircraft came in ONLY for an oil change. After the owner talked with Lynn he decided he wanted to comply with this AD while we had the plane. Again, this plane wasn’t due for the compliance til next year. It was a good call. Lynn will at LEAST be looking at these every annual but that isn’t and doesn’t replace AD compliance.

The AD allows for 5 hours but the one Lynn performed today took 3 hours. At our shop rate that’s $255.
If you by chance need the cables replaced, McFarlane has the cable kits for about $550.
