On this day in 1786, America lost one of its Revolutionary War heroes when General Nathanael Greene died near Savannah, Georgia. A trusted commander under George Washington, Greene’s brilliant leadership in the Southern Campaign — especially at battles like Cowpens in South Carolina and Guilford Courthouse in North Carolina — helped turn the tide of the American Revolution. Though he passed away at just 43, his legacy as one of the nation’s great military minds endures.

You can honor his memory by visiting the General Nathanael Greene Homestead in Coventry, Rhode Island.

You can also visit Johnson Square in Savannah, Georgia, where Nathanael Greene is buried beneath a monument honoring his service to the American Revolution — a fitting tribute in the city where his life came to an end.
