In order to pass the DOT eye exam truckers must:
Have 20/40 vision with or without their glasses on. What does that mean exactly? It means that the driver must be able to at LEAST see at 20 feet what a person with 20/20 vision would be able to see at 40 feet.
Good peripheral vision. It’s important to be able to have a general understanding of what is happening around you at all times, that’s why the DOT requires drivers to have at least a 70 degree field of view.
Basic color recognition. Can you identify green from red? How about yellow from blue? It’s important to distinguish between the basic colors used for traffic and caution signs.

Truckers eyesight is by far one of the most important and tested aspects of their physical health. With such significance placed on vision, do you think AI and virtual reality glasses will start being used in the trucking industry soon?
