Another one! On October 1, 2025, the Wilmington Fire Department, Delaware will transition from a 24/48 schedule to a new 24/72 staffing model, adding a fourth shift to operations.

This change means firefighters will now work 24 hours on followed by 72 hours off, averaging 48 hours per week instead of the previous 56. Working an extra day once per quarter for the 48 averge rather than the typical 42

To support the new model, Chief Looney has announced a series of promotions that will take effect on October 1. These promotions are designed to strengthen coverage, support the additional shift, and continue delivering high-level service to the City of Wilmington.
