🚁USCG Hoist Training Aboard the Samuel de Champlain & Innovation ⚓

While the Samuel de Champlain and Innovation were northbound below Manitou Passage, the U.S. Coast Guard reached out requesting support for hoist-training operations.

Able Seamen Andre Turner and Ituau Toilolo, Conveyorman Justin Smith, and Ordinary Seaman Case Franzak had the opportunity to take part in two tag-line basket hoists, receiving hands-on guidance from the AST (rescue swimmer) who was lowered to our deck.

Meanwhile, Mate Chris Hyzy and Captain Karl Hardesty managed all communications with the aircrew and ensured smooth coordination with our deck team.

Great work by everyone involved—training like this strengthens readiness and reinforces our commitment to safety on the Great Lakes.

⚓The SS Alpena is finally departing Cleveland for sea trials after receiving a new steam turbine. Soon she’ll officially begin her 83rd shipping season—an incredible milestone for one of the oldest active steamships on the Great Lakes. ⚓️

Here’s to another safe and successful season for this hardworking vessel!
