The Whispering Pines Motel, which hosted traveling African-Americans and performers at Charlie’s Place during the 1940s, 50s and early 60s, is almost ready for customers again. The ad hoc Charlie’s Place Committee, composed of interested local residents and city staff, toured the reconstructed property last week. The nightclub known as Charlie’s Place is long gone, but the motel operated by Charlie and Sarah Fitzgerald, as well as their home, remains. The city sought to preserve the rich musical history of that time and place.

The re-created motel units feature screen doors and window air conditioners, as they would have 60-plus years ago, and that's the subject of our Photos of the Week. For more images, see https://www.cityofmyrtlebeach.com/i_want_to/find/photos_of_the_week/pow072420.php.

Some units have been decorated as a museum to the style of that bygone era, while others will be available to modern tenants as business and community incubators. The outdoor site also serves as a venue for events and activities.

Diamond Cab is looking for motivated drivers to work either day or night shift. Drivers are independent contractors who make cash daily. Experience helps but is not required. Must have a smartphone or tablet with unlimited data or high data limit. Must be able to be approved by our insurance (generally 25+ years of age) and must be able to get city taxi permit.

Diamond Cab COVID-19 Update:

Thank you to all of our loyal customers. As many of you know, COVID-19 has affected every single small business in the country, including Diamond Cab. We have been fortunate to be an essential business that has been continually serving the Grand Strand, and we are lucky to be aiding essential workers in their efforts to go to-and-from their jobs.

We are making every effort to keep all of our customers and team safe and healthy. Drivers are being provided with disinfectant wipes, hand sanitizer, and face-masks in accordance with CDC and DHEC guidelines.

Our goal is to make sure everyone arrives at their destination safely. We ask that if you are not feeling well or have been exposed to COVID-19 to please seek medical advice and stay home.

We look forward to hearing from the rest of our customers as hotels and other businesses open, and everyone begins to return to work.

Happy New Year everyone! Reminder that we will be here all night tonight (just like every night), so no reason to drink and drive. Please give us a call to arrange transportation to a destination of your choice, instead of taking the paddy wagon to J Reuben! Its much cheaper in the long run.
