😱They trusted AI with their climb. They needed to be rescued…

We are living in an AI generated whirlwind right now. I cannot tell you how many people reach out to me about travel after having “done their research” with AI and chatbots, only to find that what was created in five seconds is not actually feasible.
The recent Mount Shasta rescue is an important reminder that AI can produce an answer quickly, but quick does not mean accurate, current, safe, or realistic. The climbers reportedly went off route, ran low on food and water, and ultimately needed rescue after relying on AI for key elements of their planning.
One of my motivations for continuing confidently in my work as a travel advisor is the need to help people discern truth from reality when it comes to travel. Many major chatbots pull from similar information sources. While AI can create a curated looking itinerary, it can also hallucinate, provide outdated information, and recommend experiences that simply are not possible or do not work well in real life.
For example, AI may recommend restaurants that have been closed for years. It may suggest a hotel because it has a strong SEO marketing strategy rather than because it provides the best overall guest experience. It may build an itinerary with destinations that are hours apart or require significant transfers, making the plan more stressful than enjoyable.
Travel planning is more than a pretty itinerary. It requires discernment, current knowledge, logistics, relationships, and firsthand experience. It means understanding how a destination actually works, what is worth your time, where you should stay, and how to create a trip that fits your interests, budget, and travel style.
