Situational Awareness in Action

While working Ground Control today, Controller Matthew Leach observed a large, clear balloon drifting across the airport surface at approximately 50 feet AGL.

Recognizing the potential hazard to aircraft operations, Leach immediately notified Airport Operations and provided the information necessary to locate the object. Airport Operations responded and successfully recovered the balloon from the airfield.

Foreign objects on or around the movement area can present a serious hazard to aircraft, including the potential for engine ingestion.

This is a great example of the importance of maintaining situational awareness beyond the immediate traffic picture and quickly coordinating with our airport partners when a potential safety hazard is identified.

On one of the darkest days in American history, Air Traffic Controllers delivered one of aviation's finest hours.

At 9:42 AM, an unprecedented directive was issued: land every civil aircraft in United States airspace immediately. With unwavering composure, controllers safely guided an estimated 4,546 commercial and private planes to the ground. By 12:16 PM, the skies stood silent.

It was a monumental operational feat—unplanned, untrained for, and executed flawlessly under unimaginable pressure. While most of the controllers who held the line on September 11, 2001, have since retired or passed on, their legacy of duty and steady resolve endures.

We honor the lives lost in lower Manhattan, at the Pentagon, and aboard American Airlines Flights 11 and 77, and United Airlines Flights 175 and 93. May God bless their families, and may God bless the United States of America.

45 years ago yesterday controllers walked off the job to demand better pay and a 32-hour work week. They were given an ultimatum, return to work or be fired.

Today, 45 years later, controllers are working mandatory 48 hour work weeks, managing record breaking levels of traffic, and are fighting for 2.8% annual pay bumps that don't even keep up with inflation.

They deserve better. We've failed to protect those that protect our skies.
