Ed’s been here a while. He’s a local New Gretna boy who knows how to catch em’. It’s not often I see him and his gang congregating by the filet table. When I do I know they got on more than just a couple. Nice fishin’ today. Looks like when it comes to catching nice BIG FLAT FISH, like this 24.5”, it’s not bad to be from NEW GRETNA!

And just like that, the bite is turning HOT, HOT, HOT! and took the boat out of a perfect session and found a couple of fish each. The fishing may not have been as red hot as the evening before as a change in winds and tide slowed the bite down a hair, but CATCHING A VIBE is what it’s all about. Low winds, cool breezes, and fishable conditions in a 17’ boat is an evening any angler can dream about. The bite has definitely improved since last week. From the sounds of things, it may be time to use some chartreuse colors and a happy dancing MINNOW for your best chance at keeper fish.

⚠️⚠️⚠️Very Important Update ⚠️⚠️⚠️
DOUBLE CREEK CHANNEL WILL NOT BE MARKED AT ANY TIME IN
THE NEAR FUTURE.

We have confirmed with New Jersey ATON that Double Creek Channel will not be marked anytime soon. The crews expressed concerns regarding portions of the channel that currently do not have sufficient depths to safely mark for navigation.

The NJ DOT has been contacted, and the area will require surveying, with any potential action dependent upon the outcome of that survey and possible emergency dredging efforts.

Please note: this is NOT a U.S. Coast Guard maintained channel. Double Creek Channel is solely maintained by the State of New Jersey.

While we understand this is not the news many boaters were hoping for, the integrity of Oyster Creek Channel remains good and continues to be the recommended route.

As we receive additional information and updates, we will gladly share them with everyone. Stay safe and boat smart!

There’s still some hanging around. And for guys like Doug, here, it’s no mystery how you catch em. Just grab you a half dozen or so from the Dock and send them down deep. Bounce em’ from the bottom, or float em’ up top. You’ll know the fish are close when you feel that LIVE EEL absolutely freaking out on the end of your hook. Let that circle hook ride, then just reel baby. And if it really is MYSTERY YOU ARE AFTER, don’t worry- Dougie won’t tell a soul where he got it and either will I!

It HAS been a while for Captain George and the “OUTALINE” crew. But lucky for them the stars have aligned just in the nick of time. Even if it’s one magical trip offshore before you end your season it’s plenty to give thanks for this holiday season.

Every year it’s a gamble.. do I spend a few extra bucks and get that late season slip over or do I just fill these live wells up with antifreeze, fog my motor and put her on the hard? Heck, grocery prices and your kids soccer games are enough to keep up with! You may even be trying to sell your boat since it’s not being used as much as you’d like.

But… you look at the wind reports, and you see a window where maybe, JUST MAYBE it won’t blow 50mph all day. You call up a friend and he’s got the day off so you go for it. Fill the boat up with fuel and take a ride. And at first, you’re cursing yourself. Damn. Maybe we missed it… maybe the fall run is already come and gone. You start making your way back from where the reports were heavy and then… you see it.

BIRDS. They’re working, and they’re working hard.

Pull up close, but not too close! Looks like a large school of fish breaking the top, aggressive, chasing shiny bait. You switch over to that OOOOOLLEEE “DEADLY DICK!” It’s a lure you could probably hammer out yourself in an emergency. Don’t look like much, but a slow retrieve and a little glimmer in the water and…

WHAM! Rod bends. Reels screaming as a migrating COW takes the bait. First fish, a well over. 2nd, the same. Your heart is pumping. You and your buddies are LAUGHING LIKE MAD! A few ph***ic jokes get thrown around and the fish just keep coming. Not a single one you can keep, but you snag a quick photo and take the striped beauty over to the side of the boat and begin to help her swim off.

We all want a meal. It’s nice to take home a fish and eat it. But it’s also a magical moment to apologize to a fish for kicking its ass as you slowly nurse it back to health with some gill current. You look these animals in the eyes and wonder about IT while IT may be wondering about you! And then, a huge tail slap and the fish swims away. It’s a moment, and when done right helps keep to population going and growing. Based on what .urbano here had to say about an EPIC day of fishing yesterday, there’s still some fish around.
