Happy 4th of July! As you celebrate, make sure you have a game plan to get home. Designate a sober driver, and utilize RTA's public transit, a taxicab, or rideshare. Driving while impaired not only endangers your life but the lives of others.

For this let’s talk about how to beat the heat when biking! It’s summer in New Orleans with the sun beaming ☀️ and temperatures rising 🌡. It’s important to find ways to stay cool to avoid overheating and experiencing heat exhaustion or a heat stroke. Here are some tips to make sure you’re staying cool and protecting yourself from the sun while biking:

1. Check the temperature - if it's warmer than usual, bike slower & try to avoid long periods of exposure to direct sunlight.

2. Act fast when overheating - Go to a shaded area, drink ice water & apply ice to your hands, feet & back of your neck. Seek medical assistance if you can't cool down.

3. Stay hydrated - fill your water bottle with ice before you leave & hydrate before, during, & after riding.

4. Wear the right clothing - try to wear light colors that deflect the intensity of the sun & wear more breathable fabric like cotton & linen.

5. Wear sunscreen!
