For decades, Canal Barge Company has supported U.S. Military operations by transporting thousands of military vehicles, containers, and specialized cargo across America’s inland waterways, along its coastlines, and beyond.

From complex logistics requirements to mission-critical schedules, our vessel crews and shoreside teams have safely and reliably delivered the equipment and materials needed to support America’s military readiness.

Transporting this cargo by water not only provided an efficient means of movement, but also added an additional layer of security by keeping sensitive military assets away from traditional transportation corridors during transit.

These important moves helped establish Canal Barge Company as a trusted transportation partner demonstrating the reliability, dedication, and service that continue to support our nation’s security.

In 1933, Canal Barge Company acquired its first piece of equipment, the CBC, 1, from Gulfport Shipyard in Port Arthur, TX for $5,000. Featuring one of the earliest onboard cargo pumping systems on the US inland waterways, the 1,000-barrel sized barge helped increase the efficiency of petroleum transportation and represented a new way of thinking about moving liquid cargo along our country’s waterways. CBC 1 was also the first barge to feature an all-welded steel construction as other barges at the time were either riveted steel or made of wood.

More than 90 years later, the CBC 1 remains a testament to the ingenuity and determination that continue to drive progress on America’s waterways and the blueprint of our solutions-oriented operations across our modern day fleet consisting of tank, open hopper, and deck barges.

As America celebrates its 250th anniversary, we are proud to reflect on innovations like the CBC 1 that helped move commerce forward and showcase the creativity, determination, and problem-solving spirit woven throughout America’s story.

As we conclude our 2026 Vessel Officer Workshop series, we reflect on a strong first half of the year shaped by collaboration, alignment, and a shared commitment to moving our organization forward.

Both Canal Barge and Illinois Marine Towing vessel officers came together throughout the workshop series to focus on Building the Best Boat and Barge Company with our Marquette Transportation teammates. Each session reinforced our priorities around safety, operational consistency, and continuous improvement, while also addressing key industry challenges, including the risks surrounding the Jones Act waiver.

In this final workshop, we recognized 240 collective years of service, a testament to the experience and dedication across our fleet.

Thank you to every captain, pilot, engineer, and family member who participated. Your commitment to safety and to one another continues to drive our success as we carry this momentum into the year ahead!
