Today, the Seamen’s Church Institute joins the nation in celebrating Independence Day and the beginning of America’s 250th anniversary year.

As we honor our nation’s history, we also recognize the hardworking mariners whose dedication keeps our economy moving, our communities connected, and our nation secure. Your service is essential to America’s strength and prosperity.

Today, on the International Maritime Organization - IMO ’s Day of the Seafarer, we recognize the men and women who keep global trade moving—often under immense pressure and in increasingly dangerous conditions.

This year’s theme, “Carrying world trade. Carrying the risks,” shines a light on the realities of life at sea, especially for those navigating high-risk and conflict-affected regions.

At SCI, we see firsthand the sacrifices seafarers make to keep our world connected. Through advocacy, chaplaincy, training, and support, we stand alongside seafarers and maritime workers every day.

Their work may be out of sight, but it should never be out of mind.

A great event!

The Seamen's Church Institute was proud to present the 2026 Silver Bell Award to John Wobensmith in recognition of his outstanding leadership and contributions to the maritime industry.

Accepting the honor, John reflected on the colleagues, mentors, friends, and mariners who have shaped his career and contributed to his success. "No achievement like this happens alone," he said, recognizing the extraordinary people he has worked alongside throughout his career.

John also highlighted the deeper meaning of the award, describing it as a celebration of SCI's mission, the maritime community, his colleagues at Genco, and the mariners and seafarers whose work connects the world every day.

Congratulations, John, and thank you for your leadership and steadfast support of the people who keep global commerce moving.

SCI's President & Executive Director, the Rev. Mark Nestlehutt, with SCI Chaplain Associate and Ukrainian Catholic priest, Fr. Paul Makar, visiting the Danish Seafarers' Mission in Copenhagen as part of the International Christian Maritime Association maritime chaplain training course. Fr. Makar regularly visits with Ukrainian seafarers and others in the Port of New York and New Jersey, working out of SCI's International Seafarers' Center in Port Newark!
