Back in 2021, there was a container ship that got stuck for only six days in the Suez Canal that drew the attention of the entire world. In just six days, the estimated damage to global trade from the incident was close to $10 billion. We are living in an interconnected world where each product’s parts are made in different countries, so any bottleneck in part of the trade route affects the entire supply chain.

This brings the importance of straits and canals to the forefront. As the latest standoff with Iran showed, the global economy is very vulnerable to any type of disruption. Read more from Rojda Akdag:

As we entered 2026, many importers and exporters shared the same expectation: “If the Red Sea returns to normal, the market will ease, and freight rates will become more stable.” In theory, this sounds logical. However, in practice, maritime transport is still quite unstable. One week, rates go down, while the next week another surcharge appears somewhere else. Transit times are getting better again, but schedules still don’t feel fully reliable yet. So why is this the case? Read more from Yusuf Deniz Üzülmez:

In a notable antitrust case, the U.S. government this week announced charges against four different Chinese shipping container companies, accusing them of conspiring to fix prices and manipulate container markets over the past five years.

The companies in question are China International Marine Containers (CIMC), Singamas Container Holdings, Shanghai Universal Logistics Equipment, and CXIC Group Containers. Collectively, they control a large portion of global shipping containers, which makes the scheme a big deal to prosecutors, who say shipping operations were further impacted even mid a massively disruptive pandemic: Covid. In the trucking industry, fraud was always a problem – it’s definitely not a new problem. However, what has happened over the last few years with double brokering in the freight world is a bit different. It has gone from a known trouble to a full-blown crisis. Read more from Kubilay Cuhaci:

President Donald Trump was traveling back to the U.S. on Friday, just two days after a short trip to China where he hoped to make progress on key issues with Chinese President Xi Jinping. The so-called “summit” was announced earlier this year after Trump and Xi spoke amid a chilly period of U.S.-China relations.

Despite positive statements released by both the U.S. government and Chinese governments touting “substantial progress” on key issues, no major announcements were made towards ending two of the biggest pieces of uncertain for shipping and logistics: the war in Iran and U.S.-China tariffs. Brazil’s anti-dumping investigation into U.S. polyethylene has gone through enough reversals over the past eighteen months to leave most of the market uncertain about where things actually stand. After Braskem filed a dumping complaint in 2024, Brazil imposed provisional ADD measures in August 2025, and the preliminary numbers came out at $199.04 per metric ton for U.S.-origin polyethylene, and $238.49 for Canadian.

Then in February 2026, Brazil’s foreign trade council (Camex/Gecex) published a recalculated dumping margin for U.S. polyethylene at $734.32 per metric ton. A move like that, if imposed, would effectively price U.S. polyethylene out of the Brazilian market for most grades. Read more from Dogukan Ertem:
