Demand for Class 8 tractors has remained resilient, but the latest ACT Research notes that there is softening in big fleet profitability. Expectations are that current strong production and sales in the face of weak freight creation will exhaust pent-up demand in 2023, as lower freight rates, higher equipment and borrowing costs, improved equipment availability and shrinking profits put downward pressure on demand overall.

XPO has seen some major growth over the last year since the company announced its plan to divide its tech-enabled brokerage services into its own business, with the core of its business evolving to a stand-alone, purely less-than-truckload carrier serving 99% of ZIP codes in North America. As part of the company’s transition to its stand-alone LTL status, it launched a strategic LTL 2.0 plan to widen its market share and strengthen operations.

“We think about these investments as long term. We’re not making them for the next few quarters, we’re making them for the next few years and beyond,” said XPO’s Ali Faghri.

Finding parking is an issue for many of us, and for truckers, there's no exception. The shortage of parking for truck drivers has been a recurring issue in the trucking industry for decades, but the problem has reached crisis proportions in recent years. According to the Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association, there is only one parking spot available for every 11 trucks on the road. The research shows most Americans are in favor of more truck parking and want government to act now to address the shortage.

Shipping flowers has its unique challenges at any time of year. They’re fragile, need refrigeration and often come from afar. Given the volume of demand on Valentine’s Day, the stakes are even higher. More than 250 million roses are grown alone for the holiday, and suppliers have the precarious task of ensuring the precious buds arrive at retailers and flower shops on time.

So, how do flowers get from farms to warehouses, to shops and eventually, to their destinations?

As shippers and retailers face an added challenge of market volatility, their deliveries in time for love’s big day are even more impressive. So, how do flowers get from farms to warehouses, to shops and eventually, to their destinations?

Bob Costello, ATA’s chief economist, said the trucking industry continues to see growth, and he pointed to the December’s ruck tonnage index, which showed a 3.8% year-over-year increase and a 0.3% month-to-month rise. Costello also said that while those numbers are solid, the industry likely will see a slowdown in freight because the economy is regaining a more traditional position — spending on goods and services is coming back into balance.

Even with a stronger-than-expected 2.9% fourth quarter increase in gross domestic product, two prominent freight transportation economists say the threat of a recession will persist this year.
