Just cracked the whole Jerry and the cat storyline from S4Ep4!!
Like most people who watched S3Ep4 of Rick and Morty, the story behind the talking cat has been driving me crazy. I had just about given up hope on making sense of who that cat was, what could have been so terrible in the mindscan that made Rick almost kill himself, and most importantly, why can the cat talk!
I was just watching "Love Death & Robots" (WARNING SPOILERS) and in the end of the "3 Robots" episode, the cat starts talking, and reveals that humanity had genetically altered cat DNA and gave them opposable thumbs which ultimately led to the downfall of the human race. The key here, is that the voice actor for the cat was Chris Parnell, who also voices Jerry!! The cats even look alike (https://imgur.com/a/rOtkqsV).
This leads me to believe that the whole storyline of Jerry and the cat was poking fun at the end of this episode of
"Love Death & Robots". This is most likely just an inside joke between Justin Roiland, Dan Harmon and Chris Parnell because neither show explains why the cats can talk. Additionally, when Rick and Jerry did the mindscan of the cat they probably saw how a bunch of hyper-intelligent cats with opposable thumbs took down the human race, a scene that would be jarring for even the most jaded individuals.
This doesn't explain the cat's obsession with Florida, but I feel like this is a big step in figuring out what the hell that last episode was all about.
