Amanda joined Parker Towing in 2016 as a pilot on one of our shift boats. She soon moved shoreside and served as crew dispatcher for several years before stepping into a Safety and Compliance role, where her responsibilities have continued to grow. In her new position, she will oversee our safety and compliance programs, regulatory requirements, audits, and crew training while continuing to support our vessels and the crews who run them.

Having worked on the boat and alongside our crews, Amanda brings firsthand perspective to her work. When asked what she’s most proud of, she pointed to the relationships she has built with our crews and the progress made together in strengthening our safety culture.

“I’m grateful for the opportunity to continue growing with Parker Towing and for the trust the company has placed in me,” Amanda said. “I look forward to continuing to build a safety culture where employees feel comfortable speaking up, sharing ideas, and being involved in making Parker Towing an even safer place to work.”

Everybody starts somewhere, and for these Parker team members, completing deckhand training is an important first step in their river careers.

If you work or worked on the river, you already know. But for everyone else, these are passing arrangements between two vessels when meeting on the water.
• One Whistle: “I intend to leave you on my portside.” The vessels pass port to port (left side to left side) like cars meeting on a road.
• Two Whistle: “I intend to leave you on my starboard side.” The vessels pass starboard to starboard (right side to right side).

The terms come from the traditional whistle signals – one or two short blasts. Today, pilots commonly make the arrangement by radio but still refer to it as a one-whistle or two-whistle pass.

Long before a tow gets underway, crews are already preparing for the trip. Equipment is inspected. Conditions are reviewed. Barges, wires and connections are checked. Crew members discuss the work ahead and make sure everyone understands the plan. Safety starts long before the engines engage.
