ποΈ Dades Valley Guide: Gorges, Kasbahs and the Road of a Thousand Kasbahs
The Dades Valley is a green river valley in southern Morocco, between the High Atlas Mountains and the Jbel Saghro range. Palm groves, almond trees and old earthen kasbahs line the river, and at the town of Boumalne Dades the valley narrows into the dramatic Dades Gorge, with red rock walls up to 500 meters high.
For many travelers, the Dades Valley is one of the most beautiful stops on the road between Marrakech and the Sahara. In this guide, Genuine Morocco, a Marrakech-based travel agency that organizes private tours across southern Morocco, explains how to get there, what to do, where to stay and when to go.
π How to get to the Dades Valley
Most travelers reach the Dades Valley by private car, usually as part of a tour between Marrakech and the Sahara Desert.
ποΈ From Marrakech. The Dades Valley is about 320 km from Marrakech, a drive of 6 to 7 hours. The road crosses the High Atlas over the Tizi n'Tichka pass and passes Ait Benhaddou and Ouarzazate, so there is plenty to see along the way.
π¬ From Ouarzazate. The valley is about 110 km from Ouarzazate, less than 2 hours by car, through Skoura and the Valley of Roses.
πͺ From Merzouga. Coming back from the desert, the drive to the Dades Valley takes about 4 to 5 hours via Tinghir and the Todra Gorge.
β Our favorite way. Spend a night in the Dades Valley on the way to Merzouga. It breaks up the long drive and gives you time to enjoy the gorge at sunset.
ποΈ Things to do in the Dades Valley
β’ π£οΈ Drive the famous zigzag road: the hairpin bends climbing out of the Dades Gorge are among the most photographed roads in Morocco.
β’ π See the Monkey Fingers: these strange rock formations, about 9 km from Boumalne Dades, look like giant fingers pressed into the hills.
β’ π₯Ύ Hike the gorge: walk through narrow canyons and along the river, past fields, walnut trees and Berber villages.
β’ πΉ Visit the Valley of Roses: around Kelaat M'Gouna, roses are grown to make rose water and oils. In May, the town celebrates its famous Rose Festival.
β’ π° Explore old kasbahs: the road between Ouarzazate and Boumalne is known as the Road of a Thousand Kasbahs, with earthen fortresses along the way.
β’ ποΈ Visit the Todra Gorge: about an hour away, its narrow canyon walls rise straight up on both sides of the path.
β’ π΅ Share tea with a Berber family: discover daily life in the valley and enjoy real Moroccan hospitality.
π¨ Where to stay in the Dades Valley
Most travelers spend one night in the valley, either inside the gorge or in the town of Boumalne Dades.
π‘ Kasbah guesthouses in the gorge. Family-run guesthouses built in traditional style, often with terraces facing the cliffs and home-cooked Moroccan dinners. They are a good choice for travelers who want an authentic experience and beautiful views.
π Boutique hotels and luxury kasbahs. Restored kasbahs and boutique hotels with elegant rooms, private bathrooms, swimming pools and excellent food. They are ideal for couples, honeymooners, families and luxury Morocco tours.
Wherever you stay, try to arrive before sunset, when the red cliffs of the gorge glow in the evening light.
π Best time to visit the Dades Valley and what to pack
The best times to visit the Dades Valley are spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November), when the days are mild and perfect for hiking. Spring brings almond blossoms and, in May, the Rose Festival in Kelaat M'Gouna. Winter nights are cold because of the altitude, and summer afternoons can be very hot.
What to pack:
β’ Warm layers and a jacket for cool evenings
β’ Comfortable walking or hiking shoes
β’ A hat, sunglasses and sunscreen
β’ A reusable water bottle for hikes
β’ Modest clothing for visiting Berber villages
β’ A camera for the gorge, the kasbahs and the zigzag road
