On Monday, Secretary Xavier Becerra joined Assemblymember Buffy Wicks (D-Oakland), BART Director Barnali Ghosh and BART General Manager Bob Powers for a tour of 70 affordable apartments under construction at the El Cerrito Plaza BART Station. BART, the State of California, the City of El Cerrito, and development partner Related California joined forces to build the housing for qualifying low-income individuals and families earning 30% to 60% of the Contra Costa County Area Median Income.

This is the first in a multi-phase Transit-Oriented Development (TOD) that will ultimately transform approximately 6.5 acres of underutilized BART parking lots into 743 new apartments.

El Cerrito Plaza is one of several major TOD projects that BART is advancing across its system, designed to generate ridership and contribute to the agency’s long-term financial sustainability, strengthen local economies, and provide equitable access to opportunity.

BART’s TOD program delivers well-designed, mixed-use, higher-density housing and community amenities adjacent to BART stations. TODs help reduce household transportation costs and environmental impacts while boosting transit ridership and supporting regional housing goals.

CANCELLED: The previously scheduled vegetation management work has been cancelled between San Leandro and Bay Fair stations on Sunday, October 18.

We will have regular Sunday service with full Green Line service.

The previous post:
Crews will be in the trackway on Sunday, October 18 between San Leandro and Bay Fair stations to manage vegetation that could affect our ability to offer safe and reliable service. The work will start before we begin service and continue until 6pm. Riders in the area should expect 25–30-minute delays. There will be no Green Line service for the entire day but we will continue to provide service to all 50 stations.

East Bay riders who would typically use the Green Line can instead use the Orange Line and transfer at Bay Fair to a Blue Line train to travel transbay. San Francisco riders can take the Blue Line and transfer to the Orange Line at Bay Fair. Orange and Blue line trains will be extended in length from six to eight cars throughout the day to provide additional capacity for riders who typically use the Green Line.

BART is launching a pilot program to test Aira, a video interpreter service designed to help blind and low vision customers navigate to, from, and through the BART system. The pilot runs through Sunday, January 3.

Aira connects users with live, professionally trained visual interpreters through a video call on a free smartphone app called Aira Explorer. Using the camera on a rider's phone, interpreters can describe surroundings, read signs and text, and help with tasks such as finding a station entrance, locating fare gates and ticket vending machines, identifying the correct platform, and boarding the right train.

"Blind and low vision riders have told us that navigating to and through our stations can be a real challenge, especially finding fare gates and other key features," said Ryan Greene-Roesel, Director of BART Customer Access and Accessibility. "This pilot gives us a chance to test whether a live, on-demand interpreter can make those everyday trips easier."

BART will participate in the 2026 International ShakeOut Day earthquake drill on Thursday, October 15, to test our emergency response systems and to help raise public awareness of the importance of having a plan and being prepared.

At 10:15am, BART staff will trigger our ShakeAlert early warning earthquake system to ensure it is functioning and working correctly. Once triggered, trains will automatically slow down to 27mph and then return to normal speed. BART staff will also make a systemwide public announcement encouraging riders to be prepared for earthquakes. BART will also test our internal communications systems to notify employees and the Operations Control Center will observe earthquake alarms and our train control systems to ensure they are working properly. BART has also added simulated damage inspections to its ShakeAlert drill, which you can read more about below.

BART is an early adopter of the ShakeAlert system, which is connected to a network of USGS seismic sensors throughout California. When the BART seismic condition threshold is reached is reached, the system sends a speed restriction command to trains. This system removes human response time and can even slow trains down before the shaking occurs depending on how far away the quake is centered.

BART has an Earthquake Emergency Response Plan, and we hold several drills a year to ensure staff is trained and ready to respond. In the event of an earthquake, riders should listen for instructions from BART personnel. Employees are trained to evacuate the public from dangerous areas. Following an earthquake, BART trains are held in place (except for trains in the Transbay Tube and Berkeley Hills Tunnel) until it is determined it is safe to move the train to the nearest station where riders will be offboarded.

In September 2024, BART completed its Earthquake Safety Program, which retrofitted vulnerable high traffic portions of the original system to make it safer in a large quake. The Earthquake Safety Program was funded in part by Measure AA, a $980 million general obligation BART bond approved by voters in 2004. The program focused on upgrading portions of the original system not only for life safety but also to ensure that we can return to operation shortly after a major earthquake.

BART's Earthquake Response Team (ERT) consists of around sixty engineers and thirty maintenance employees that fan out across the system in the advent of a major earthquake, defined as an earthquake with a magnitude of 6.0 or greater with an epicenter within 50 miles of the BART system. Since its inception, the ERT has never been activated for a real event, but they train throughout the year to prepare for the real possibility of a massive earthquake rattling the Bay Area.
