Recently I had the opportunity to represent our community in Hot Springs NC as the Incident Management Team Incident Commander. This community was greatly impacted by the floods associated with Hurricane Helene and upon returning home I wanted to find a way to make a bigger impact on that community. The flooding not only damaged most of their business district that relied heavily on tourism to support the economy, but also severely damaged the town’s city hall, public works facility, library, sewer treatment facility and community center. As a focal point in the downtown area, I thought what better way to help support that community than adopting its community center. I have talked to several local people and all thought it was a great way as a community to show our support.
What I am looking for is support from our community. I would like to plan a trip to Hot Springs in early December to restore the Hot Springs community center so that it can be a place for community members to gather, celebrate or coordinate the significant rebuilding process. As a community we would bring skilled labor, craftsmen, supplies and everything needed to restore the building and outside area over a long weekend. As building material is tough to get in that area due to such a need, we would bring our own material as a donation. The final step would be to place a Christmas tree in the community center decorated with ornaments from our community.
If you would be interested in representing our community to make a difference in the western part of North Carolina please contact me so we can work on a plan to gather the resources needed. Please share with our local community members.
