Camping season means the S’mores Box is officially back in action. 🔥🍫✨

Mine lives in a sealed Rubbermaid container packed with all the essentials so I can grab it and go. Graham crackers, marshmallows, chocolate… plus a few “this sounded good at the store” additions. 👀

What’s your s’more style?
🏕️ Traditional classic?
🍪 Cookies instead of grahams?
🍫 Over-the-top candy bar chaos?
🍓 Fruit added?
🔥 Burnt marshmallow or golden brown perfection?

I need ideas for my next refill. 😂

Coolers are being packed.
Kayaks are coming back out of storage.
And thousands of Michiganders are counting down the days until that first campfire of the season. 🔥

The forfeit policy is not new. The change involves enforcement. Instead of park personnel mannually canceling it, the system will automatically cancel your reservation if you don't check-in within 24 hours of your reserved check-in time.

Hartwick Pines campers, following DNR Parks and Recreation Policy, campsites must be occupied within 24 hours of your arrival date. If not checked in by 3 PM the next day, your campsite will automatically be moved to “No-show”, canceling your stay.

While this policy is not new, our reservation system will now automatically cancel no-shows in place of park staff manually removing the reservation. By booking a campsite and choosing not to come without canceling, it takes away the chance for another visitor to enjoy that spot.

To make changes to your reservation, visit midnrreservations.com or call 1 (800) 44-PARKS.

🎈 A gentle reminder from Wander Wild… balloons don’t go to heaven.
🎈
I know balloon releases often come from a place of love, grief, and wanting to honor someone we miss. The intention is beautiful. Truly.
🎈
But those balloons? They don’t disappear into the clouds… and they don’t make it to heaven. Eventually, they fall back to earth—into forests, rivers, lakes, farm fields, marshes, and sometimes the very wild places we claim to love.
🎈
🦌🦅🐢 Wildlife can mistake balloon pieces, ribbon, and string for food—or become tangled in them. Birds, deer, turtles, fish, and other animals can be injured… or worse. What feels like a tribute in one moment can become litter—or a death trap—in another.
🎈
Nature remembers what we leave behind.
🎈
🌲✨ If you want to honor someone’s memory, there are ways to make it meaningful and lasting:
🎈
• Plant a tree in their honor
• Scatter wildflower seeds (where permitted)
• Donate to a cause they loved
• Light a candle and share stories
• Take a memorial hike and leave no trace
• Place a bench, birdhouse, or native plant in their name
🎈
Love can rise without leaving harm behind.
🎈
Sometimes the most beautiful tributes are the ones that give life back to the world.

Solo Adventure Myth vs. Reality
🌲
Myth: Solo adventures are lonely.
🌲
Reality:
Solo adventures are sunrise coffee with nobody rushing you.
They’re quiet trails where your thoughts finally get a turn.
They’re paddling your own pace... stopping when you want to stop... taking the long way because nobody’s waiting.
🌲
They’re learning to trust yourself.
To problem solve.
To get a little uncomfortable... and realize you can handle more than you thought.
🌲
Whether it’s hiking, kayaking, camping, or simply exploring somewhere new... sometimes the best company you can keep is your own.
🌲
Have you ever gone on a solo adventure... or is it still on your someday list?

🔥 TRAIL TIP TUESDAY: Fire Season Is Here, Michigan. 🔥

If you saw the wildfire reports coming out of Northern Michigan yesterday… this is your reminder that spring hiking and camping season also means wildfire season.
🌲
Yesterday, multiple fire incidents were reported across Northern Michigan, including an active wildfire in Oscoda County near the Mio/Mapes Road area that led to evacuations, along with additional brush and marsh fires in other parts of the region. Fire conditions escalated fast because of:
💨 Wind gusts up to 45–50 mph
🍂 Dry leaves, pine needles, and last year’s grass
☀️ Low humidity during Michigan’s “pre-green-up” season
🔥
Because of this, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources paused burn permits in many northern counties, and Red Flag Warnings were issued across 22+ counties.
🥾
Today’s Trail Tip: Help prevent wildfires before they start.
✔ Fully extinguish campfires — drown, stir, repeat
✔ Never leave a fire unattended… not even “for a minute”
✔ Don’t park hot vehicles over dry grass
✔ Check trailer chains, tie-downs, and equipment for anything that could spark
✔ Skip debris burning on high-risk days
✔ If you see smoke or an active fire, call 911 immediately
🧡
Michigan’s woods are waking up—but right now, many of them are also dry enough to ignite from one small spark.
Protect the places we love. Adventure responsibly.
