Exporters often default to comparing freight rates between RO-RO and Break Bulk, but the fundamental choice is always based on the cargo itself:
If the machinery rolls, it's RO-RO. (Optimal for drive-in/drive-out efficiency, minimal lifting, and drastic risk reduction.)
If it doesn't roll, it's Break Bulk. (Necessary for non-running, oversized, dismantled, or dimensionally unique cargo that exceeds RO-RO deck limits.)
While this rule is simple, the ex*****on is complex. What many overlook is that port infrastructure is often the deciding factor. If a destination port lacks the necessary RO-RO ramp service, even a self-propelled unit must default to the Break Bulk method.
Choosing the incorrect methodology doesn't just inflate costs; it can lead to massive delays if the receiving port cannot properly handle the unit. The simple rule gets complicated by global capability.
