Let’s be honest… sometimes even the pro organizer has organizing projects she doesn’t finish. 🙋‍♀️

I started organizing this space in my kitchen, realized I needed a few different organizing products, and had to make another trip to the store. But the REAL reason it’s still unfinished? Life happened, and I put it aside. 🤷🏼‍♀️

And honestly, I have a feeling I’m not the only one.

Maybe it’s the kitchen drawer you started emptying, the closet with everything pulled out, or the pile you were going to sort through weeks ago. Sometimes we start with the best intentions, get interrupted, and move on to the next thing. Before we know it, we have half-finished projects hanging over our heads.

So I’m going to be sharing more of these spaces around my house, and we’re going to finish them together! No pretending my house is always perfectly organized. No waiting for the perfect time. Just making progress, one space at a time. 🙌🏻

Because organizing doesn’t have to be perfect, and it doesn’t have to happen all at once. Sometimes we just need to pick up where we left off.

Tell me I’m not alone! 👇🏻 Do you have a half-finished organizing project somewhere in your house? What is it? Let’s get those spaces finished together! 🏡

Week 6 of our grocery spend challenge 🛒

The grocery spending is still very low, but I’m officially starting to feel it! 😂

We’re down to just a few full or partial frozen meals, and I’m working through the last of pretty much every type of frozen protein we have. Now I’m running out of pantry staples, too. We’re officially out of rolled oats (which is a big deal around here!), and I’m starting to run low on seasonings and other ingredients I usually take for granted.

This is where getting creative comes in. When I made cookies with our brown bananas, the recipe called for raisins, but I had dried blueberries on hand, so I used those instead. Little substitutions like that are helping me keep cooking without running to the store every time I’m missing something.

I’ve also started a list of things we’ll need to repurchase when this challenge is over, and I’m thinking I’ll take you along for that process, too!

One question I think a lot of people have about a challenge like this is: Don’t you just end up spending a ton of money afterward to restock everything?

Honestly, I don’t think that will be the case for us. Going through this process is helping me identify which ingredients are true staples for our family, which things we use regularly enough to keep stocked, and which items we can actually do without.

The goal isn’t to empty our pantry and freezer just to fill them right back up. It’s to be more intentional about what we buy, what we keep on hand, and what we actually use. I’m curious to see what makes the final restock list and what I realize we don’t really need after all. 👀

Have you ever done a pantry or freezer challenge? Did you find yourself buying everything back afterward, or did it change the way you grocery shop?

Week 5 of my grocery “use what we have” challenge 🛒

We’re officially 5 weeks in, with 3 more weeks to go! I’m curious to see what the rest of this challenge teaches me about our grocery habits, what we actually need to keep stocked, and where I can make some changes going forward.

Swipe through to see what we ate + what I used up this week! 👆

$344.55 on groceries for our family of 5 in September. 🛒

But honestly, the number at the end is not the most valuable part of this challenge. What I learned from doing it is.

Here are my biggest takeaways:

→ We have more food than I think we do. When I actually took inventory and started searching my recipe binder by ingredient, I found so many “meals” hiding in the pantry, fridge, and freezers.

→ I need to stop stockpiling “good deals.” Especially kids’ snacks. Buying something because it’s on sale doesn’t save money if we already have more than we can realistically use.

→ I make WAY too much 9f certain food ahead. I love homemade muffins, pancakes, desserts, etc., but this challenge made me realize our freezers were getting pretty full of things I had made “for later.”

→ Our meat supply was actually the thing getting low. I went into this thinking we had plenty, but by the end of the month I was running low on chicken, ground beef, and other staples.

→ Not everything needs to be cut. Fresh fruit for the kids, Fairlife milk, my almond milk, and the sometimes more expensive option with a cleaner ingredient list are worth buying. The goal isn’t to make our grocery list as cheap as possible. It’s to spend intentionally on the things we actually use and enjoy.

→ Using what we have takes more creativity than restriction. Some of my favorite meals and treats this month came from figuring out what I could make with ingredients that were already sitting around.

And now that I know what I’ve learned, I’m taking those lessons straight into month two. October will be another month of intentionally using what we have, but this time I have a much better idea of where our actual problem areas are, what we’re running low on, and what I need to stop buying just because it’s a “good deal.”

September taught me what we have. October is about getting even better at using it. 🤍

Week 4 of my grocery spend challenge 🛒

This week I spent a little over $110, which is definitely more than the last couple of weeks, but I’m still really happy with where our total is landing.

I restocked our usual Fairlife milk, my very expensive almond milk, and picked up some frozen fruit because my kids love smoothies for breakfast. I’m pairing that with something I’ve been noticing as I dig through our freezer: we have A LOT of homemade frozen food.

Specifically… frozen desserts and breakfast foods. I have muffins, pancakes, and other breakfast things tucked away, plus a whole collection of homemade treats in the freezer. So instead of continuing to buy or make breakfast foods and desserts, I’m trying to intentionally work through what we already have. Easier said than done because I love baking so much!

I was also getting pretty low on meat, so chicken made its way onto the list this week. That’s one of the things I’m okay replenishing during this challenge because we cook so much from home and meat is something we actually go through consistently.

We had one meal out this week at my in-laws, and I brought caramel apple cinnamon rolls. The ONLY ingredient I had to buy specifically for the cinnamon rolls was more flour because I had officially run out.

After four weeks of the challenge and finishing a full month, I’ve decided to roll it into a second one - so who’s with me in joining in the challenge for October?

Come plan next week’s recipes with me! 🛒🍴

One of my favorite parts of doing a “use what we have” challenge is figuring out how to turn the food we already have into meals we’re actually excited to eat.

So this week, I’m taking you along while I look through the fridge, freezer and pantry, see what needs to be used up, and start piecing together our meals.

I’m not starting with a blank meal plan and making a grocery list from scratch. I’m starting with what we already have and building from there.

I’ll look at ingredients that need to be used first, think about what sounds good, check what proteins and produce we have on hand, and then fill in the gaps with a few things we actually need.

By the end, I’ll have a rough plan for breakfasts, lunches, dinners and a few snacks for the week, all based around what’s already in our kitchen.

This is honestly how I prefer to meal plan most of the time. It saves money, helps prevent food from going to waste, and makes the fridge/freezer/pantry feel a whole lot more manageable.

Come see what I’m thinking for this week! 👀
