Ontario budget promises billions for highways, commits to ELDs

Ontario’s provincial government is promising big spending on highways and other infrastructure in a budget released ahead of a June election.
The document commits $25.1 billion over the coming decade to expand and rehabilitate highways, including work on a new Highway 413 for Halton, Peel, and York regions that the government will save drivers up to 30 minutes per trip.

Will the Diesel Engine Ever Be Perfected?

The California Air Resources Board has approved for 2027 what the Engine Manufacturers Association refers to as “sweeping new regulations affecting heavy-duty trucks sold in the state.”
The regs include a 90% reduction in NOx, half the particulate, and especially the ability to do this under low-load conditions. Crawling conditions pertain all too often on California freeways and are only predicted to get worse — hence the part of the rule relating to low load.
New technologies like skip-firing — as well as any number of potential after-treatment modifications like extra selective catalytic reduction (SCR) catalysts located closer to the turbo — could, it is likely, meet the requirements.

The observation, released by Trucking HR Canada, comes on the heels of recent Statistics Canada data that shows one in five people (21.8%) in the overall workforce falls within that demographic group.
Statistics Canada is scheduled to release its transportation-related demographic information this fall.

The trailers might last longer than the underlying technology – transportation refrigeration units can last 5 to 10 years, and the underlying trailers can be in service 12 to 15 years or longer, TMC executive director Robert Braswell observed in a group chat, during a webinar releasing the results. In contrast, some technology-related products can last three to five years, he said. Over-the-air software updates will solve some challenges, but new hardware can be required to support new features.

Manitoba budget commits $1.5 billion for highways over three years

Manitoba will invest $1.5 billion in its highway network over the next three years, part of $2.4 billion in infrastructure funding included in the 2022 provincial budget.

Upgrades to highways within the Manitoba Trade and Commerce Grid will ultimately represent 36.5% (7,112 km) of the province’s all-weather road network, and 6,000 km of the work has already been completed, the province said.

Legislation designed to enhance the movement of freight at ports is part of Congress’ agenda over the coming weeks, a key negotiator of the bill told reporters April 26.

During Senate Democrats’ weekly press conference, Sen. Maria Cantwell (D-Wash.) emphasized that fellow lawmakers were meeting to arrive at a final version of the Ocean Shipping Reform Act. Versions of the bill recently advanced in the House and in the Senate.
“We’re working on issues that affect everyday consumers on price. As you know, we passed out of the Senate a shipping bill that we’re working with the House to resolve the differences on,” Cantwell said. “This is very important because shipping costs accelerated greatly and have raised costs on average Americans.

Kenworth constructing new test building at Chillicothe plant

Kenworth is investing US$45 million into its Chillicothe, Ohio, truck plant, adding a 105,000 sq.-ft. test building.

The expansion will grow the facility’s footprint by 17%. The plant is located on a 120-acre site about 50 miles south of Columbus, Ohio. Kenworth says the building will be completed in the second quarter of 2023, and testing and validation activities will be conducted there.
