The Young Eagles is a program created by the Experimental Aircraft Association designed to give children between the ages of 8 and 17 a free introductory flight in a general aviation airplane to inspire them in the world of aviation.
Cost: Flights are free of charge, with all costs covered by volunteer pilots and ground crew.
Benefits: Participants receive an EAA Student Membership, access to free online flight training courses, and potential scholarships for future flight lessons.

Award-Winning Piper Cherokee 140 to be displayed on Airport Day!

This is a Piper Cherokee 140 (PA-28) built by the Piper Aircraft Company in 1973 in Vero Beach, Florida.

Cherokees are the fourth most produced aircraft in history. It was first type certificated by the FAA in 1960 and the series remains in production to this day. The Cherokee family have installed engines from 140 to 300 horsepower including turbocharging, retractable landing gear, constant-speed propellers and the ability to accommodate up to 6 people.

This model features a 140 (modified to 160 horsepower) engine, all metal construction, low mounted wings and tricycle landing gear. It seats 4 with flexible fueling to give a variety of useful load options. Set up and maintained for IFR (Instrument Flight Rules) it is regularly flown that way.

It is owned by Mark and Christine Maxwell of Mansfield Ohio.

Among the many changes over the years have been a new interior (seats, all trim, carpeting), exterior paint, and engine overhaul. The instrument panel has seen significant changes to match its mission of flying under instrument conditions and cross country travel.

Its current owners have flown N55973 throughout much of the eastern United States as well as being able to enjoy short flight seeing on any beautiful day.

At the Cherokee National Fly-In & Convention in June of 2006 at Osage Beach Missouri, it was selected as the Best Cherokee 140 produced between 1969-1977. The presentation was by Phil Boyer who at the time was the President of AOPA (Airplane Owners and Pilots Association), an organization of over 300,000 pilots.

One of the newest airplanes that will be on static display is a 2024 Aeroprakt A-22LS. Affectionately know as the "Lil' Red Rocket." this light sport plane is owned by Joseph Nastasi, aka Aviator Joe, who in addition to his YouTube channel, is the guy behind this page and the static display on Airport Day.

The Aeroprakt is built in the Ukraine, distributed in the US by Heavenbound Aviation. Designed in the early 1990s, it is an all aluminum aircraft that is built to be rugged and easy to maintain. This particular A-22LS has been outfitted with larger tires and is capable of off-airport landings. It also features a modern glass panel with backup analog gauges, an autopilot and a ballistic parachute that, in the event of an emergency that can not be handled by gliding down to the surface, deploys a parachute that brings the plane and it's occupants down safely.

Aviator Joe put almost 300 hours onto this plane after taking delivery on January 22, 2024. After an engine issue in early November last year, a new engine has just been installed, and the Lil' Red Rocket was put back in action just last week and just in time for Airport Day.
