Maintenance Monday | Glossary of Terms: TBO (Time Between Overhaul)

TBO is the manufacturer-specified number of flight hours or calendar time after which a propeller must be overhauled.

It’s one of the key numbers that drives how you plan downtime, budget major maintenance, and manage risk as the aircraft moves through its lifecycle.

A clear understanding of TBO helps maintenance teams stay ahead of major service events and maintain safe, efficient operations.

Maintenance Monday | Glossary of Terms: Corrosion

Corrosion is a subtle but serious threat to propellers—especially on aircraft that operate in coastal or humid environments, sit outside on the ramp, or fly infrequently.

Over time, it can weaken metal, shorten component life, and turn a routine shop visit into unexpected findings.

A clear understanding of corrosion helps maintenance teams identify issues earlier and prevent minor surface damage from becoming costly repairs.

Not all propeller facilities use the word “certified” the same way — and understanding who issued the certification makes a difference.

All legitimate propeller repair stations must hold FAA certification. That approval authorizes them to perform maintenance and overhaul in accordance with regulatory requirements. It’s the baseline standard.

Some facilities also maintain OEM authorization or recommendation status. That’s a separate designation from the manufacturer and typically requires factory training, OEM-approved tooling and equipment, use of genuine parts, compliance with current service bulletins and technical data, and periodic audits.

Those additional requirements create a direct oversight relationship between the manufacturer and the repair facility.

When evaluating where to send a propeller for overhaul or repair, it’s worth asking two distinct questions:

• Is the shop FAA certified?
• Is the shop also authorized or recommended by the OEM for your specific propeller?

The answers are not always the same.

Learn more about how FAA certification differs from OEM authorization — and why that distinction matters:
