Florida to Baltimore. Dropping Friday, then I was headed to Paulsboro to see my friends for the weekend.
Got to the receiver at 8am. Sign on the door says they open at 9.
9 o'clock, nobody. 9:30, nobody. 10 o'clock, still nobody.
I call the broker. Turns out the business was closed for the holiday weekend. Which I had completely forgotten about. That one's on me.
So I tell him: I'll keep it on my truck through the weekend if you want to pay weekend storage.
He says no.
Alright then, find a way to get it off my trailer, because I'm not holding it for free.
He comes back with $150.
I told him that was a joke. Three days. My trailer, tied up, earning nothing, while I'm supposed to be off. $300 a day and I'll deliver it Monday morning.
He wouldn't do it.
So I got on the phone and helped them find a cross dock. Load came off my trailer around 4pm. I made my weekend.
Here's what I want you to take from that:
Your trailer is not free storage. When freight is sitting on it, your equipment is earning zero and your weekend is gone. A broker offering $150 for three days isn't negotiating. He's finding out whether you know what your own equipment is worth.
And notice I didn't just say no and hang up. I helped them solve it. You can hold your line and still be somebody people want to work with. Those aren't opposites.
Also, check the receiver's holiday calendar before you roll. I forgot. Cost me a full day sitting.
