Long holiday weekends can create more opportunities for cargo theft. In CargoNet’s five-year analysis of Labor Day theft activity, 214 theft events were recorded, with the Friday before Labor Day showing the most activity.

Extended closures, reduced staffing, and freight sitting unattended can all create additional risk. Before the long weekend, it is worth double-checking carrier information, pickup details, secure parking plans, shipment visibility, and who needs to be contacted if something does not look right.

A few extra checks before freight moves can make a big difference after it does. Stay safe this Labor Day weekend.

Cross-border freight continues to play a growing role in North American supply chains.

New data from the U.S. Bureau of Transportation Statistics shows U.S.-Mexico freight reached $89.2 billion in June, up 22.2% from June 2025. Trucks accounted for $68.5 billion of that movement.

As cross-border activity grows, the details matter even more. Documentation, customs requirements, communication, tracking and reliable capacity all play a role in keeping freight moving smoothly from one side of the border to the other.

At Sethmar, our cross-border team helps customers navigate those details with the support, visibility and experience needed along the way.

The freight market is sending a mixed signal right now.

Summer demand has softened from earlier in the season, but capacity in the dry van market remains tighter than it was a year ago. Recent DAT Freight & Analytics data shows rates beginning to ease week over week while still sitting well above 2025 levels.

For shippers, that makes lead time especially valuable. Accurate shipment details, flexibility when possible, and communicating needs early give your transportation partner more options to build the right capacity strategy before a shipment becomes urgent.

Markets change quickly. Good freight planning changes with them. Let's get in touch: https://sethmar.com/contact-us/

Brake Safety Week is Aug. 23-29, 2026, and now is the time to make sure equipment, maintenance records, and inspection routines are ready.

The Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) announced that this year’s focus area will be brake drums and rotors, in addition to overall brake-system inspections and reporting brake-related violations.

For carriers, it is an important reminder to stay on top of maintenance, repair records, pre-trip and post-trip inspections, and any issues that could affect brake performance.

For shippers, brake safety matters too. Out-of-service violations can remove capacity from the road, create service disruptions, and put drivers, the public, and freight at risk.

Safety is not a one-week reminder. It is part of reliable transportation every day.

Freight conditions can look very different in July than they did in January.

Capacity, rates, fuel costs, route guide performance, delivery expectations and customer demand can all shift by lane, region and mode.

A mid-year freight check-in helps answer practical questions:

Are certain lanes becoming harder to cover?
Are recurring delays showing up?
Are lead times still realistic?
Are accessorial charges becoming more frequent?
Do you have backup options if capacity tightens?

The best time to review your freight plan is before it becomes a problem. At Sethmar, we help customers stay proactive as conditions change.
