Chains in the truck. The right fit. The right tires.
Winter preparation starts before the first mountain pass.
On designated routes, qualifying commercial vehicles must carry chains during these seasons—even when the pavement is dry:
▪️ Colorado: September 1 – May 31
▪️ Montana: October 1 – April 30
▪️ Washington: November 1 – April 1
That means chains must be ON BOARD, ready to use. Installation is required when chain restrictions are active.
Swipe through for placement examples in Washington, Oregon, California, Utah, Colorado and Wyoming. These examples cover a five-axle tractor-semitrailer with tandem drive axles and dual tires.
Before you roll:
— Count individual chains, not bags.
— Check sizes for both drive and trailer tires.
— Inspect for damage and practice fitting them in the yard.
— Check your route’s current restrictions.
Requirements vary by vehicle, route and conditions. Posted signs and highway authorities govern your crossing.
Save this carousel and share it with a driver heading west.
