New York Botanical Garden NYBG Tram Tour & Bronx Community Gardens!

We visited the New York Botanical Garden, or NYBG, in the Bronx in New York. And although we thoroughly enjoyed walking through the garden, and did our entire visit on foot, the park also provides trams you can hop on, to explore the grounds without having to walk the full 250 acres. They are open-air vehicles that follow a set route through the Garden, and the journey includes a narrated audio tour while riding. You can complete a full 20-minute loop of the park, or get off at any one of the eight stops along the route. It is a fantastic way to get a broad overview of the Garden, and choose which areas you wish to explore in more detail on foot. Before visiting the Edible Academy, we found the Bronx Gardens: Growing Community exhibit. Located in the Barnsley Beds, which are eight beds of edible plants grown through organic gardening principles, this exhibit honors the legacy and future, of Bronx community gardens.

Exploring Oak Alley Plantation Slave Quarters & Louisiana History

Here, at Oak Alley Plantation, located in Vacherie, Louisiana, we explore the slave quarters area. The cabins give visitors a physical sense, of the stark contrast between the luxury of the Big House that the Roman's lived in, and enslaved life. This quarter, was for a seamstress and hairdresser, Pognon, who was always at the Roman's beck and call. House slaves served the family directly, running errands and working late into the night. Since they reflected their owners' social status, they were given better clothing, and expected to always remain presentable. Outside, we find a massive laundry kettle, where slaves used homemade lye soap to do the laundry, burning their hands and arms, marking them as washer women. And across from it, was a water well, with a wooden top, to keep small children and animals, from falling in.
