Produce volumes are down 18% in the Central Valley. So why are re**er rates up 32%?πŸ‡

The answer is capacity, not freight. Fresno is losing trucks faster than it's losing loads, and the next two weeks could tighten things further.

πŸ“‰ Central Valley produce volumes down roughly 18%
πŸ“ˆ Fresno outbound re**er spot rates up about 32% year over year
πŸš› Brake Safety Week runs August 23 to 29, pulling more trucks off the road
πŸͺͺ California's enforcement of non-domiciled CDL and English-language requirements is thinning capacity further

You don't need volumes to rise for rates to rise. You just need capacity to fall faster, and that's exactly what's happening here.

Re**er operators, Fresno is the market to watch this weekπŸ‘€

Do you know your cost to idle? Is a gallon an hour accurate? If so, it costs trucks $6 an hour to wait to load/unload. Run the .

An hour of idling burns about a gallon of fuel.

Ten hours a night. Every night. Do that math over a year.

Nobody is telling you to be uncomfortable. Comfort matters out here. But know what it costs so you can decide if it is worth it.

Most drivers have never run that number.

Run it.

"Billie, fuel is coming down. Are rates going to come down?"

Diesel prices aren't the only thing controlling the rates.

It's supply and demand.

Freight pricing is driven primarily by supply and demand. Right now, there is strong demand for trucks across multiple industries, including construction, infrastructure, manufacturing, and agriculture. Those sectors are competing for the same pool of drivers and equipment, which naturally keeps rates elevated.

At the same time, a trucking company's operating costs extend far beyond fuel. Tires, maintenance, repairs, insurance, permits, equipment, wages, food, and the cost of replacing trucks have all increased significantly over the past several years.

A small decrease in diesel prices doesn't erase those higher operating expenses.

Professional drivers and carriers also have choices. They aren't going to haul freight that doesn't cover their costs when higher-paying opportunities are available elsewhere. If a load doesn't pay a suitable rate, many trucks will simply move to freight that does.

Everyone wants to reduce transportation costs, but those savings can't come at the expense of the people actually moving America's freight.

Carriers deserve fair compensation that allows them to safely maintain their equipment, pay their drivers, and stay in business. Fair freight rates benefit the entire supply chain by ensuring reliable capacity and dependable service.

The goal isn't to find the cheapest truckβ€”it's to find a reliable truck at a fair market rate. When carriers are paid fairly, everyone wins.
