In the maritime industry, a pilot is a highly trained local mariner who boards a vessel and helps guide it safely through a specific waterway and into or out of port.
And hereโs a fun fact: maritime pilots came first! The word pilot was used at sea centuries before aviation, referring to an expert who guides vessels through difficult or unfamiliar waters.
At Port Pascagoula, our local Pascagoula Bar Pilots use their specialized knowledge of our channels, depths, tides, currents and vessel traffic to help vessels safely navigate between Port Pascagoula and the Gulf.
