In the maritime industry, a pilot is a highly trained local mariner who boards a vessel and helps guide it safely through a specific waterway and into or out of port.

And hereโ€™s a fun fact: maritime pilots came first! The word pilot was used at sea centuries before aviation, referring to an expert who guides vessels through difficult or unfamiliar waters.

At Port Pascagoula, our local Pascagoula Bar Pilots use their specialized knowledge of our channels, depths, tides, currents and vessel traffic to help vessels safely navigate between Port Pascagoula and the Gulf. They work alongside the shipโ€™s captain and crew to help vessels safely navigate between the Port and the Gulf.

A little too close for comfort. ๐Ÿ”ฅ

This aerial view from the Jackson County wildfire shows just how close the fire and heavy smoke came to Port Pascagoulaโ€™s Jackson County Industrial Water Facility on Bayou Cumbest Road.

Thankfully, our facility sustained no damage, and we are incredibly grateful to the Mississippi Forestry Commission, local fire departments, first responders and everyone who worked quickly and tirelessly to contain the fire and protect nearby property and critical infrastructure.

The Industrial Water Facility provides water services to industries throughout the Bayou Casotte area, making its protection especially important to our Port and our industrial partners.

To everyone who answered the call this weekend: thank you for protecting our community. ๐Ÿ‘

We know the lumber business. ๐ŸŒฒ๐Ÿšข

Forest products have long been part of Port Pascagoulaโ€™s story. This week, another shipment of Mississippi logs is loading at our South Terminal, headed for the global market.

Port Pascagoula was pleased to welcome Mike Gaeta, Dave Strickler, and Tim Osborn (NOAA), Stacy Stevenson (U.S. Coast Guard), and Jasper Walsh and Walter Gautier (Pascagoula Bar Pilots) to our office today. The group met to discuss modernizing Electronic Navigational Charts and improving the maintenance, integration, and sharing of navigational data across agencies and maritime partners.

Better data. Better charts. Safer navigation. โš“๏ธ๐Ÿšข๐Ÿงญ

Hurricane Frederic (1979)

Port Pascagoula has weathered many storms over the decades, and each one has helped shape the port we are today.

This aerial photo captures warehouse damage following Hurricane Frederic in 1979. While the storm left its mark, it never stopped the Port from doing what it has always done: rebuilding, adapting, and keeping commerce moving.

For nearly 70 years, resilience has been part of our story. โš“

Port Pascagoula's Business Development Manager, Chuck Camp, and Operations Manager, Jeremy Rogers, recently attended the Mississippi Lumber Manufacturers Association, MLMA's Annual Convention & Trade Show in Biloxi, where they connected with manufacturers from across the state and explored new import and export opportunities.

Lumber and forest products have long been a cornerstone of Port Pascagoula's business, and we're proud to continue building relationships that help keep Mississippi products moving through a Mississippi port.
