It’s clear that many Northumberland County business owners and residents share concerns about the county requesting private income and expense information to determine property tax values.
Property taxes should be based on the value of the land and buildings, not the income of the business operating there.
While owner occupied properties may not need to complete the form, many residents and businesses own properties that are not owner occupied. The income generated from a property does not change the property itself, and using private income information to determine tax assessments raises serious concerns for property owners and small businesses.
Higher property taxes on rented or leased properties will inevitably lead to higher rent costs for tenants, including small businesses renting commercial space and families renting houses or apartments throughout the county.
If you haven’t signed yet, please take a moment and share with other business owners and property owners in the county.
