How long will a dead deer hold thermals?

A dead deer will hold a thermal signature for a variable amount of time, ranging from hours to over 40 hours, depending on environmental factors, the type of shot, and the decomposition process. Factors like overcast skies, rain, direct sunlight, and the initial body temperature will all influence how long a thermal signature is detectable. A carcass may show a heat signature for days even after death, especially due to sunlight, and decomposition fluctuations can create intermittent or inconsistent thermal readings.
Environmental factors: Overcast skies and rain can create ideal conditions for thermal detection, while direct sunlight can also heat a carcass to a detectable level. Temperature fluctuations will affect the thermal signature over time.
Decomposition: As a carcass decomposes, body heat fluctuations will occur, which can be detected by thermal imaging. A deer shot 40 hours prior was located by a drone with thermal imaging.
Type of shot: A gut shot may lead to a longer recovery time (8-12 hours) before searching for the deer, as spoilage can occur more rapidly.
