Buried beneath a towering monument at Lexington Cemetery in Kentucky, Henry Clay remains one of the most influential political figures of the 19th century.
On June 29, 1852, Clay died in Washington, D.C., after decades at the center of America’s biggest debates. Known as the “Great Compromiser,” he served as Speaker of the House, U.S. senator, secretary of state, and ran for president multiple times.
After his death, Clay became the first person to lie in state in the U.S. Capitol Rotunda before his body was returned home to Kentucky.

Jefferson Davis was born in Fairview, Kentucky on this day, June 3, 1808.

Davis would go on to become one of the most controversial figures in American history as the President of the Confederate States of America during the Civil War.
