☕ Some products come with more than a good cup of coffee. They come with more than a century of stories.

Before Gift With a Story opens, we're introducing you to some of the makers, products and American traditions you'll discover in our gifts.

And this one has quite a story.

Horn & Hardart began in Philadelphia in 1888, when Joseph Horn and Frank Hardart opened a small restaurant. Coffee was there from the very beginning — in fact, according to the company's history, their very first customer ordered a cup.

Horn & Hardart would eventually become famous for the Automat, where customers selected food from rows of little glass-fronted compartments. The first Horn & Hardart Automat opened on Chestnut Street in Philadelphia in 1902.

And then there was the coffee.

Customers could insert a coin, turn a handle and watch fresh coffee pour from an ornate dolphin-shaped spout — a design inspired by the fountains of Florence, Italy.

Today, Horn & Hardart is being revived, beginning where much of its story began: with coffee.

Because sometimes a cup of coffee isn't just a cup of coffee.

It's a little piece of history.

There’s a story behind what’s in the jar. 🍎

Before Gift With a Story opens, we want to introduce you to some of the makers, foods, traditions and stories you'll find inside our gifts.

One of those makers is Bauman’s Family, a Pennsylvania family business whose fruit-butter tradition dates back to 1892.

Fruit butter is wonderfully simple in concept: fruit is slowly cooked until moisture disappears and the fruit becomes thick, smooth and intensely flavorful. The result is something generations have spread on toast and biscuits, spooned over desserts, used in baking, and worked into family recipes.

And apple is only the beginning. We'll be carrying a variety of Bauman's fruit butters, giving you a chance to discover flavors beyond the traditional orchard favorite.

Every product has a past. Every gift has a story.
