Downtown Pensacola

Downtown Pensacola Downtown Pensacola—discovered in 1559 and recently voted “Florida’s Greatest Place”!
(3367)

Dating back 450 years as the first European settlement in the United States, Pensacola has a rich and colorful history, and the heart of the city of Pensacola is its downtown. A refreshing blend of historic resolve and cosmopolitan progress defines Downtown Pensacola, a 44-block district encompassing historic and archaeological sites, chic shops, eclectic art galleries and award-winning restaurant

s. It's a walkable district lined with colorful bicycle racks, and bustling with alternative transportation options—from pedicabs to Segways to trolleys to holiday-time horse-drawn carriages. Thousands come to the nationally-recognized Blue Wahoos waterfront stadium, just around the corner, during spring and summer, and thousands more head downtown each Saturday for Palafox Market, a farmers' market enjoying its tenth anniversary in 2017. During the holidays, downtown Pensacola glows with the lights of half a million white lights and the month-long Winterfest, recognized as one of Florida's Top Events. How well do you know downtown Pensacola?

You’ve probably walked past it. But have you noticed it? 👀

Those footprints in the sidewalk at Plaza Ferdinand VII, across from Jacksons Steakhouse, are the Palafox-Trot. Follow the steps and try out your dance moves, or just strike a pose and get a selfie. It’s a fun little Downtown detail hiding in plain sight.

Downtown Pensacola was lucky enough to have a little Dolly magic of our own.

On November 29, 2016, Dolly Parton took the stage at a sold-out Pensacola Bay Center during her Pure & Simple Tour, filling the evening with the songs, stories, humor and heart that made generations feel like they knew her.

It was also a deeply personal night. As devastating wildfires swept through her beloved East Tennessee, Dolly paused during the concert to ask the Pensacola audience to pray for the people back home.

It was a moment that said so much about Dolly. Even with thousands of people there to see her, her heart was with her neighbors, her community and the place that shaped her.

Today, Pensacola joins millions around the world remembering an extraordinary songwriter, storyteller, philanthropist and one-of-a-kind American icon.

Thank you for the music, the laughter and the heart, Dolly.

We will always love you.

Open The Pensacola Journal on Aug. 20, 1912, 114 years ago today, and you might have spotted an advertisement from J.M. Clutter’s Music House for the Lester Piano.

If the ad caught your eye you could head downtown to the Clutter Music House showroom at 112–114 S. Palafox St. to take a look.

Today, that location is home to Peterbrooke Chocolatier Pensacola Palafox at 112 S. Palafox and Corals Closet at 114. But more than a century ago, this stretch of Palafox was a destination for Pensacola's music lovers.

Clutter Music House sold pianos, organs, sheet music and other musical merchandise, along with offering piano tuning and repairs. The store once boasted of carrying “The Largest Line of Pianos Ever Seen in Pensacola.”

Among the brands sold at Clutter’s were Singer, Smith & Barnes, Kranich & Bach and, of course, the Lester Piano featured in the Aug. 20, 1912, edition of the Pensacola Journal.

In 1928, radio announcer John E. Frenkel from local station WCOA did a live broadcast describing a parade as it passed in front of City Hall in downtown Pensacola. The station had debuted just two years earlier on February 3, 1926, Florida's second radio station and the first in Pensacola. On opening day, hundreds of people gathered in Plaza Ferdinand, waiting to hear the first sounds of radio in Northwest Florida. At precisely 8:30 p.m. WCOA went on the air and the broadcast was piped over a large horn on top of City Hall.

Frenkel served as Pensacola’s City Clerk as well as WCOA’s manager of operations, and it was he who came up with the call letters of WCOA, which stand for “Wonderful City of Advantages.”

The City Hall Building is now the Pensacola Museum of History.
