Spotlight #23

This week’s Barn Quilt Trail spotlight features a quilt owned by Scott and Stephanie Bronenkant. The pattern, titled “Snowflake,” features an International emblem at its center — a nod to Scott’s love of classic farm equipment.

Scott owns and still regularly uses a 1952 Farmall tractor, keeping a piece of agricultural history alive on the farm today. During the holiday season, he also decorates a Farmall F12 with Christmas lights, creating a festive tradition that many enjoy year after year.

The Perry County Barn Quilt Trail is full of unique stories that celebrate local farming heritage, family traditions, and rural life across the county.

Spotlight #40

This week’s Barn Quilt Trail spotlight features a quilt located on a barn owned by Phillip and Tammy Hacker. The quilt, titled “Mother’s Choice” — also known as “Dove at the Window” — was installed by Phillip’s aunt, Anna Hacker Lexow.

The quilt’s green and yellow color scheme proudly represents John Deere colors, while the “H” in the design stands for the Hacker family name. The farm itself has been part of the Hacker family for four generations, beginning with Phillip’s great-grandparents, Charles and Gusta Hacker. Ownership then passed to their daughter-in-law, Irma Hacker, followed by her children Robert Hacker and Anna Hacker Lexow, and today remains in the family with Robert’s son, Phillip.

The Perry County Barn Quilt Trail is filled with stories like this one — celebrating family history, agriculture, and local heritage across the countryside.

This barn quilt is owned by Justin and Stephanie Pyland. The sunflower pattern, titled “Volunteer,” was inspired by the beautiful barn quilts found throughout the area and the volunteer sunflowers that birds faithfully “plant” in their yard each year.

Bright and cheerful, the design reflects both community inspiration and the simple joys of nature. This quilt block is best viewed from their backyard along St. Joseph Street, where it adds a sunny touch to the neighborhood. 🌻

This barn quilt is owned by Ann Welker and features the pattern “Donald’s Delight.” The colors were thoughtfully chosen to reflect John Deere green and yellow — a fitting tribute to her husband, Donald.

Donald was proud to be a John Deere man. Farming wasn’t just his job — it was his life. He felt blessed to work the land and took great pride in running John Deere equipment. One of his favorite upgrades was a tractor with a “buddy seat,” which meant his grandchildren could ride along. They now cherish those special memories spent beside their grandpa in the fields.

The farm was previously owned by Donald’s parents, continuing a family legacy rooted in agriculture. The barn itself has evolved over time — once featuring a loft, it was later updated with truss rafters and transformed into a machine shed, adapting to the changing needs of the farm while preserving its history.
