Morning thoughts | no. 3

Hazelnut coffee = my 4th grade teacher
Scope mouthwash = my high school boyfriend
Bath & Body Works Honeysuckle = my mom
Clinique Happy = my Aunt Sharon
Instant coffee = my grandpa

None of these are memories I decided to attach to a scent. They just happened.

Years later, I can smell one of them and a person appears in my mind before I’ve even had time to think about why.

California Vineyard 🤍

When I created this one, I was thinking about everything that comes BEFORE the wine. Rows of vines growing in the sun, green leaves, ripe grapes, and the warm agricultural landscape around them.

I wanted this scent to feel like standing in the vineyard, not opening a bottle.

and there’s one especially fun detail hidden in this bar: wine flour.

wine flour is made from the grapeskin and seeds left behind after winemaking. I added it directly to the soap, giving vineyard a tiny physical connection to the process that inspired it.

Fruity, green, and earthy. This one is my interpretation of California Wine country from the ground up.

California Redwood 🤍

I really did think… I grew up in the woods. How different could these woods possibly be?

Very.

Camping beneath the redwoods was one of my favorite experiences by exploring Northern California. The scale, the mist, the soft forest floor, the smell, the banana slugs, the enormous fire-scarred trees, it felt ancient in a way I had never experienced before.

This Redwood scent is my attempt to capture a little bit of that feeling in soap: warm, woody, spicy, and grounding

Eucalyptus rain 🤍

I discovered California’s eucalyptus groves by accident.

I was driving along the coast at night and suddenly the air smelled overwhelmingly like eucalyptus. I really couldn’t see what was around me, but the scent was everywhere.

As I kept driving and paying attention, I realized we were passing through huge groves of eucalyptus trees.

I had never experienced eucalyptus like that before…not a bottle of essential oil or a bundle hanging in a shower, but entire trees filling the air around me.

I experienced them alongside another version of California I hadn’t really imagined before visiting: cold, foggy, misty, coastal air.

Those two memories became eucalyptus rain 🤍

California Orange Blossom 🤍

One of my favorite things about orange blossom season is that you smell it before you see it. The fragrance carries. It’s intensely floral and fresh.

Citrus has such a long history in California, and oranges are one of the few things I associated with California long before I ever spent time there.

But… orange blossom isn’t meant to smell like the fruit, it’s inspired by the flowers that come first.

That’s also why this bar is white. Simple floral, and all about the blossom.

California Sea Salt 🤍

Some of my favorite memories in California have happened along the coast: Catalina Island, beach trips after work conferences, Little coastal towns, long drives along the Pacific, and one drive from Los Angeles to San Diego that took us a full day because we stopped at every possible beach along the way.

Sea salt isn’t meant to capture one particular beach. It’s the familiar thread I find running through all of them.
