Juneteenth celebrations have been happening across the United States for years, but over the last few years the day’s profile has been elevated as a result of heightened awareness of racial inequality.

For those of you who may not be familiar with the origins of Juneteenth – the day represents the oldest known nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States on June 19, 1865.

On June 19, 1865, Major General Gordon Granger led his Union soldiers into Galveston, Texas where he announced that the Civil War had ended and proclaimed that all the slaves were free. Of note, this happened two and half years after President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation.

On this Juneteenth, we embrace the opportunity to reflect and rejoice, while continuing to improve as a society and move forward to learn more and do more to address racism and racial inequality.

Mental Health Awareness Month (also referred to as “Mental Health Month”) has been observed in May in the United States since 1949. This year’s theme is “Together for Mental Health”.

Did You Know?

1 in 5 American adults experiences some form of mental illness in any given year
Across the population, 1 in every 20 adultsis living with a serious mental health condition such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder or long-term recurring major depression.
It’s a good time to raise awareness of mental or behavioral health issues, to help reduce the stigma and to check in on those you feel may be struggling.

The month of May is recognized as Asian American/Pacific Islander Heritage Month!

Efforts began in 1977 to proclaim the first ten days in May as Pacific/Asian American Heritage Week. After various iteration and some progress, in 1992, Congress designated May as Asian/Pacific American Heritage Month.

It’s a celebration of Asians and Pacific Islanders in the United States. A rather broad term, Asian/Pacific encompasses all of the Asian continent and the Pacific islands of Melanesia (New Guinea, New Caledonia, Vanuatu, Fiji and the Solomon Islands), Micronesia (Marianas, Guam, Wake Island, Palau, Marshall Islands, Kiribati, Nauru and the Federated States of Micronesia) and Polynesia (New Zealand, Hawaiian Islands, Rotuma, Midway Islands, Samoa, American Samoa, Tonga, Tuvalu, Cook Islands, French Polynesia and Easter Island).

The month of May was chosen to commemorate the immigration of the first Japanese to the United States on May 7, 1843, and to mark the anniversary of the completion of the transcontinental railroad on May 10, 1869. The majority of the workers who laid the tracks were Chinese immigrants.

We recognize the rich history and myriad of achievements that Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders have contributed to American society.

Happy Earth Day!

This year, we’d like to spotlight the use of electric and hybrid vehicles and how they positively impact our planet. Did you know that the largest source of climate pollution is transportation?

Running electric or hybrid cars in any state has lower greenhouse gas emissions than gasoline-powered cars. On average, an EV produces half of a conventional vehicle’s carbon emissions over its lifetime. At TAS, we strive to honor our commitment to sustainability as a way we show care for the communities we serve and we are committed to supporting our client achieve their sustainability goals!
