# **πŸ›‘ Weekly Safety Tip: Proper Following Distance & Avoiding Rear-End Collisions πŸš›**

# # **Why It’s Important:**
Rear-end collisions are one of the most common and preventable accidents in trucking. Keeping a **safe following distance** helps avoid sudden braking situations and gives you enough reaction time to prevent accidents.

---

# # **🚦 5 Key Safety Tips:**

# # # **1️⃣ Follow the "6-Second Rule"**
πŸ‘‰ Maintain at least **6 seconds** of following distance in normal conditions.
πŸ‘‰ In **rain, fog, snow, or heavy traffic**, increase to **8+ seconds**.
πŸ‘‰ Count seconds by picking a stationary objectβ€”if you pass it before **6 seconds**, slow down.

# # # **2️⃣ Watch for Brake Lights & Traffic Flow**
πŸ‘‰ Scan **3-4 vehicles ahead**, not just the one in front of you.
πŸ‘‰ Be prepared to slow down early when traffic starts to build up.

# # # **3️⃣ Use Cruise Control Wisely**
🚫 **DO NOT** use cruise control in **rain, snow, ice, or heavy traffic.**
πŸ‘‰ Keep your foot near the brake for quick reaction in unpredictable conditions.

# # # **4️⃣ Avoid β€œCut-Off” Situations**
πŸš— If a vehicle merges too close in front of you:
πŸ‘‰ **Ease off the throttle** to regain a safe following distance instead of braking hard.

# # # **5️⃣ Stay Alert & Scan the Road**
πŸ‘ Look **15+ seconds ahead** to anticipate slowdowns.
🚧 Keep an eye on your **mirrors** and stay prepared for sudden stops.

---

# # **⚠️ REMEMBER: FedEx and law enforcement monitor speed & following distance!**
πŸ”Ή Avoid tailgating at all times.
πŸ”Ή Arriving **safely** is more important than arriving **early**.

πŸš› **Drive smart, stay alert, and keep it safe out there!** πŸš›

07/25/2023

As the summer draws to a close and the familiar sights of school buses and children in backpacks return, it’s crucial to remind ourselves of the importance of driving safely during back-to-school time. With the roads becoming busier and kids rushing to catch their buses or walk to school, drivers must exercise extra caution to ensure the safety of our most precious cargo. This article highlights essential safe driving practices to follow during this critical period, emphasizing the role each of us plays in creating a secure environment for our children and the entire community.

Be Mindful of School Zones
School zones are designated areas near educational institutions where traffic regulations are more stringent to protect children. Reduced speed limits are enforced during specific times when schools are opening or closing. It is vital to be attentive to school zone signs and adhere to the posted speed limits to give children ample time to cross the street safely.

Stop for School Buses
School buses are a common sight during the back-to-school season, and it is essential to know the rules regarding stopping for these vehicles. When a school bus stops and extends its stop sign or activates its flashing lights, it indicates that children are boarding or disembarking. In these situations, it is mandatory to stop your vehicle in both directions until the sign is retracted and the bus resumes its journey. Failing to obey this law can have severe consequences, endangering the lives of children.

Avoid Distractions
Distracted driving is a major cause of accidents, and it becomes even more dangerous when school is in session. Avoid using your phone, eating, or engaging in any other distracting activities while driving. Keeping your focus on the road will allow you to react promptly to any unexpected situations, safeguarding the lives of pedestrians and students on bicycles.

Be Patient at Crosswalks
During the school year, crosswalks become a hub of pedestrian activity, as students and their parents cross the streets to reach their destination. Exercise patience and never rush through crosswalks. Always yield to pedestrians, even if they are not crossing at a designated crosswalk. Encouraging a respectful and considerate attitude towards pedestrians sets a positive example for other drivers.

Look Out for Bicycle Riders
Back-to-school time also means an influx of bicycle riders on the roads. Bicycles can be harder to spot than other vehicles, so stay vigilant and give them enough space when passing or making turns. Teach your children about the importance of wearing helmets and observing traffic rules while riding their bicycles to and from school.

Plan Ahead to Avoid Rush Hours
Traffic congestion during school drop-off and pick-up times can be particularly chaotic. Planning ahead to avoid these peak hours can not only save you time but also reduce the risk of accidents. Leaving a few minutes earlier or later can make a significant difference in your commute and overall road safety.

As our children head back to school, it is our responsibility as drivers to prioritize their safety and that of all pedestrians. Practicing safe driving habits during this time of year can prevent accidents, protect lives, and contribute to creating a more secure community. By being mindful of school zones, stopping for school buses, avoiding distractions, being patient at crosswalks, looking out for bicycle riders, and planning ahead to avoid rush hours, we can collectively ensure a smooth and safe transition into the new school year. Let’s commit to being responsible drivers and make our roads a safer place for everyone.

07/07/2023

The demand for specific types of trucking can vary based on factors such as industry trends, economic conditions, and regional needs. As of today, there are six types of trucking that are in high demand:

Long-haul trucking: Long-haul trucking involves transporting goods over long distances, often across state lines or even between countries. It requires drivers to spend extended periods on the road, driving for several hours or days at a time.

Refrigerated trucking: This type of trucking involves transporting perishable goods, such as food items, pharmaceuticals, or other temperature-sensitive products. Refrigerated trucks, also known as reefers, are equipped with cooling systems to maintain specific temperature ranges throughout the journey.

Hazmat trucking: Hazmat (hazardous materials) trucking involves transporting potentially dangerous or hazardous materials. These materials include chemicals, flammable substances, gases, and radioactive materials. Drivers transporting hazardous materials must adhere to strict regulations and obtain special certifications.

LTL (Less Than Truckload) trucking: LTL trucking involves the transportation of smaller shipments that do not require a full truckload. LTL carriers consolidate multiple smaller shipments from different customers into a single truck, maximizing efficiency and reducing costs.

Flatbed trucking: Flatbed trucks are used to transport oversized or irregularly shaped cargo that cannot fit inside a standard enclosed trailer. This may include construction materials, machinery, or vehicles that need to be loaded and unloaded using cranes or forklifts.

Specialized trucking: There is a demand for specialized trucking services that cater to specific industries or unique transportation requirements. For example, car haulers transport vehicles, tanker trucks carry liquids or gases, and livestock haulers transport animals.

They also fill out a checklist to make sure their truck is stocked will all the supplies it may need. The NHTSA has put out an excellent article to help families and individuals drive safely in the summer, with similar checklists for passenger vehicles. Check it out at https://www.nhtsa.gov/summer-driving-tips

As families make summer travel plans, we recommend reviewing safe driving tips prior to hitting the road.
