ATSF Winnebago Subdivision

ATSF Winnebago Subdivision The ATSF Winnebago Subdivision runs on the ex Milwaukee Road from milepost 125 to milepost 200. We c approval of the Milwaukee Road purchase.

The Winnebago Subdivision of the AT&SF Railroad was created on January 1, 1985. It came into being as part of the entire Milwaukee Road system that the AT&SF purchased by outbidding the SOO and the CNW. The Winnebago Subdivision covers part of the former Milwaukee Road's Superior Divsion from milepost 125, just north of Grafton to milepost 200, just short of Green Bay, WI. Along the subdivision, t

he AT&SF interchanges with the Chicago and Northwestern in St. John, SOO Line in Strebe and the Fox River Valley and Eastern via Oneida Junction. Many concessions had to be made to the SOO in order for the AT&SF to win I.C.C. The main concession that had an impact on the physical plant of the Winnebago Subdivision was to give up the track into the Fox Cities and their heavy industrial base. The once shared track from Strebe to Menasha is now under SOO ownership, without trackage rights. The Fox Cities are now served thru interchange with SOO Line and the Fox River Valley and Eastern. The FRVE replaced the CNW in the Fox Cities and along the valley to Green Bay after the CNW decided to focus on it's core system and the Powder River coal fields. The purchase of the Milwaukee Road and all of its assets, including embargoed lines, has enabled the AT&SF to gain access to ports in the Pacific Northwest via the Milwaukee's Pacific extension, and interchange into Canada through the DWP. This has allowed the railroad to develop more COFC and TOFC traffic between Chicago and the Pacific Northwest.Along with this and other transcontinental traffic, the AT&SF has also been able to tap into and develop ore and lumber in Michigan's Upper Peninsula and Northern Wisconsin along with the various commodities used in the paper industry. Wisconsin also has a vast agricultural traffic base to be served. The Winnebago Subdivision itself serves a broad variety of customers including foundries, grain elevators, food processing, paper mills and much more. As part of a vast nation wide rail system, the crews of the Winnebago Subdivision can get your product anywhere in the world, or help you get whatever your business needs to run smoothly.

Life has been moving along on the Winnebago Sub. There have been a few new additions and some old reminders of the past linger. A tank car trans load facility has been added to Lillian. Wash*ta has found the addition of a wood chip loader at Bruss Wood Products and an old ribbed sided boxcar is still making the rounds.

An SD9 works in Wash*ta. The name Wash*ta was chosen for this location because of the impact the series "The Wash*ta and Santa Fe", by Andy Sperandeo had on my model railroading interests.

A cab ride on train 106 along the Winnebago Sub. We ride along from North Milwaukee to Green Bay as the train makes its way from Chicago to Winnipeg. Unfortunately the illusion is somewhat diminished by the background surroundings as the train makes its way around the sub.

Lillian is located at MP 157, thirtytwo miles north of North Milwaukee. Lillian is a small town with an agricultural based economy. The rail served customers are a farm implement dealer, an ethanol plant and a feed mill. Lillian was initially switched by the NLOT local running from St. John to New Holland and back. The length of the NLOT train was normally too great to allow for the train to work Lillian and keep the main clear for through traffic. The crews also had a difficult time completing the turn without going dead on the clock with the amount of work to be done. To solve this problem, Lillian is now served by a local of its own running from the St. John yard.
