For a few hundred years the books have said that leaves fall, and the word autumn practically means the falling. Botany quietly disagrees. Leaves do not fall. The tree cuts them off.

The mechanism has a name, abscission, from the same Latin root as scissors, and it is exactly what it sounds like. As the nights lengthen, the tree builds a thin wall of special cells across the base of each leaf stem, a scored line, like perforation on a ticket. Behind that line it pulls back everything worth keeping, the minerals and the last sugars, and seals the wound with a layer of cork. Then the connection weakens until the leaf's own weight, or the next wind, finishes the cut.

That is why the leaves let go clean, leaving a neat sealed scar instead of a torn wound, and why a branch that dies in summer holds its dead leaves all winter. Nobody cut them loose.

The tree is not losing its leaves this fall. It is firing them, with severance. 🍂

A bale. That is the old word for a group of turtles, and you have seen a bale without knowing it had a name. It is the row of painted turtles lined up on a log in the afternoon sun, sometimes stacked two and three deep, a small one balanced on a big one like luggage.

The stacking is not affection. Good basking wood is scarce real estate, and a turtle needs the sun the way you need lunch. It cannot make its own heat, so the log is the furnace. The sun sets its body temperature, dries the algae off its shell, and the ultraviolet builds the vitamin the shell needs to stay hard. The turtle on top of the pile is not being carried. It won the argument.

Walk any pond edge on a sunny afternoon this week and count the bale before they hear you. You will not get close. A bale slides off its log at the first footfall, which is the other reason they pile on the same one. More eyes. 🐢
