Air Quality Air Quality Action Day tomorrow

The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection has issued an air quality action day for ozone in Allegheny County and surrounding counties for Saturday, June 25.

On air quality action days, young children, seniors, pregnant women and those with respiratory problems, such as asthma, emphysema, and bronchitis, are especially vulnerable to the effects of air pollution and should limit outdoor activities.

A strong ridge of high pressure will promote plenty of sunshine Saturday and temperatures around 90 degrees. The combination of sunshine and heat will result in robust ozone formation, leading to 8-hour maximum concentrations in the CODE ORANGE range. Better air quality is expected Monday as a cold front will bring showers and thunderstorms. Residents are strongly encouraged to voluntarily help reduce air pollution when an air quality action day is declared. To help reduce ozone pollution, you can:

• Drive less by carpooling or using public transportation
• Combine errands to reduce vehicle trips
• Limit engine idling
• Refuel vehicles after dusk; and
• Conserve electricity by setting air conditioners to a higher temperature and turning off liights

DEP Declares Code Orange Air Quality Action Day For Ozone For Tuesday, June 21, 2022, In The Pittsburgh And Indiana County Areas
06/20/2022

Harrisburg, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) has declared a Code Orange Air Quality Action Day for ozone for Tuesday, June 21, 2022, in the Pittsburgh area, which includes Allegheny, Washington, Westmoreland, Fayette, Beaver, Butler, and Armstrong counties. In addition, an Air Quality Action Day has also been declared for the Indiana county area with respect to ozone.

Mostly sunny skies and high temperatures around 90 degree will likely contribute to 8-hour average concentrations of ozone in the Code Orange range on Tuesday.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Air Quality Index (AQI) provides standardized color codes for forecasting and reporting daily air quality. Green signifies good air quality; Yellow means moderate air quality; Orange represents unhealthy pollution levels for sensitive groups of people; and Red warns of unhealthy pollution levels for all.

An Air Quality Action Day is declared when the AQI is forecasted to be Code Orange or higher. On an Air Quality Action Day, young children, the elderly, and those with respiratory problems, such as asthma, emphysema, and bronchitis, are especially vulnerable to the effects of air pollution and should limit outdoor activities.

Residents and businesses within the Air Quality Action Day area are strongly encouraged to voluntarily help reduce ozone air pollution by:

• Driving less by carpooling or using public transportation;
• Combining errands to reduce vehicle trips;
• Limiting engine idling;
• Refueling cars and trucks after dusk; and
• Conserving electricity by setting air conditioning to a higher temperature and turning off lights that are not in use.

..AIR QUALITY ALERT IN EFFECT FOR SUNDAY JUNE 6...The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection has issued a code ORANGE air quality alert for Sunday, including the greater Pittsburgh region, including Allegheny, Butler, Beaver, Armstrong, Washington, Westmoreland and Fayette counties. A code ORANGE air quality alert means that air pollution concentrations within the region may become unhealthy for sensitive groups. Sensitive groups include children, the elderly, and people suffering from asthma, heart disease, or other lung diseases. The effects of air pollution can be minimized by avoiding outdoor exercise or strenuous activity. For more information on ground-level ozone and fine particles, visit http://www.airnow.gov and https://www.ahs.dep.pa.gov/AQPartnersWeb/
