Brussels Flower Carpet: Is the balcony ticket actually worth it? 🌸🇧🇪For me? Yes! 100% worth it for the view and the museum history, but totally optional if you're on a budget. ✨Reliving memories of the breathtaking Brussels Flower Carpet on the historic Grand-Place! If you’re wondering whether it’s worth upgrading to get the balcony ticket, my take is: yes, if it fits your budget, but it's not strictly necessary.
While you can see parts of it from ground level, being up on the balcony gives you that stunning, full overhead perspective to truly take in the entire masterpiece and snap incredible photos. Plus, the tickets aren't overly expensive, and as a history lover, getting access to check out the museum and explore what they had to offer made the experience even more worthwhile!
The History & The Designs:
The Brussels Flower Carpet is a world-famous biennial tradition where a massive area of the Grand-Place is meticulously covered in hundreds of thousands of fresh flowers (traditionally begonias, though recent editions have also featured vibrant dahlias) placed by hand by hundreds of volunteers.
The 2024 Edition: Shifted away from traditional cultural themes to feature "Rhizome"—a contemporary, street-art-inspired design by Liège artist Océane Cornille (Whoups) that nodded to Brussels' Art Nouveau architecture and urban connectivity.
The Japan Connection: This current Japan-inspired edition holds such a deeply special place in my heart. Marking the 160th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Belgium and Japan, it features a "Neo-Hokusai" design reinterpreting The Great Wave off Kanagawa by artist Hiro Sugiyama. Since one of my babies was born in Belgium and another was born in Japan, seeing these two cultures come together like this feels like absolute fate. It's safe to say this event will forever be tied to my family's story! 🥲🇯🇵🇧🇪
