As Hurricane Irma approaches us, if you haven't started the preparations, we suggest you start now!

As a precaution, we encourage you to take action.

- Open boats, which can quickly be overcome (sunk) by a storm's torrential rainfall, should be hauled out of the water and stored ashore.
- Larger boats, and especially boats on lifts, are also far more likely to survive a storm when hauled out and strapped down ashore.
- If a boat can't be hauled out, add longer and larger lines to accommodate the surge.
- Chafe protection is essential.

With any boat -- ashore or in the water -- it's imperative that you remove biminis, dodgers, sails -- anything that creates windage.

Good luck and stay safe!

Need AC power aboard but don't want to fuss with those frilly, unnecessary add-ons like plugs, breaker panels, and permanent wiring? Don't simply take a 30 to 15 amp adapter, cut the end from a three plug extension cord, then tape the wires to the prongs at the 15 amp end (no need for that fancy, electrical grade tape either). Waaalllah — problem solved. Not. This is a fire or electric shock just waiting to happen.

ABYC Color Codes for Boat Wiring
Knowing the ABYC color codes makes troubleshooting electrical problems easier.

The good news is that most boatbuilders use the American Boat and Yacht Council color codes for boat wiring. Specific colors are used for specific equipment. Knowing these colors makes troubleshooting electrical systems easier.

Note that these are for boat wires. Individual equipment usually has just black and red wiring. For example, dark blue wire in a boat is the positive conductor for cabin lights (or cockpit lights in an open boat). But if you buy a replacement light fixture, it’s likely to come with a short trace of red and black wire. You would connect the red (fixture positive) from the fixture to the blue (lighting circuit positive) from the boat, through the fuse, breaker or panel to which it is wired.
