This week brought about a wonderful experience. Had the pleasure of getting to deliver a very special boat “Ranger 7” from Pleasant Harbor Marina in Brinnon WA up to Port Townsend for a haulout, and to prep her for a land journey all the way to Belfast Maine. After literal months of keeping tabs on Ranger 7’s situation, the opportunity presented itself to help the owner (who is on the east coast) and the boat. The distance wasn’t great, but there was something very special about this trip. If ever there could be such a thing as a happy boat, it was Ranger 7 cruising on this beautiful winter day. Biggest take away for me was just how much I miss being on the water and driving boats. I left a career of being a licensed captain and driving and working traditional sailing vessels to become a shipwright. No regrets in any way, but seriously considering getting my license back and maybe splitting my time between two trades?😅🙂 Anybody have a wooden schooner they don’t want anymore??🤣

Working after 5 on a Wednesday in the shipyard in mid October. So quiet…. I think everybody must have been watching the baseball game. Beautiful light/sunset. Tap of the corking mallet. Felt like I had the shipyard to myself. Stoked to be working on the “Chief Kwina” for a minute. Informal buyers survey, and some topside corking for this wonderful boat. She’s always been one of my favorites💙. More info/history to come on this special vessel.

Yesterday was a pretty special day. Spent the first part of the day replacing a shrink wrap roof for a friend on Marrowstone Island. Then back to the yard to meet up with our favorite Naval Architect and surf buddy Tim Nolan. We looked at an upcoming project, then went for a ride in Tim’s newly repowered (electric propulsion) “Canvas Back”. On our journey we came upon my old boat Ziska. Then went out on the bay where we were fortunate enough to see the freshly launched “Latifa” out for a shakedown sail. She is absolutely beautiful. Designed by William Fife III, and built in 1936. Days and moments like this make me feel very lucky 🍀, and fortunate to live here.

The dogs were cracking me up in the shop today. So decided to make some “theme music” for their shenanigans 😂😉🙌🏻

Me and the Elmore have an interesting back story. It was several first for me. First boat (only boat actually) I worked on that was built in the 19th century. First boat that I ever had the pleasure of putting 2 bow stems in. First insurance job that I had ever undertaken. And the first boat I ever commuted to by dinghy to do a sizable coach roof repair in the water 😅😂. First two photos are taken in Port Townsend Boat Haven after a large steel commercial vessel broke from her mooring and crushed the bow (almost sinking her) of the Elmore dockside in Port Hadlock. The picture with the planks removed and stem partially gone is the beginning of the process. The first picture is showing her starboard side after new sawn frames, bow stem and hawse done, and bulwark are underway. The port side mirrored the starboard with fresh wood. Purple Heart bow stem and sawn frames. Sapele planking and interior longitudinal structure. Sapele and Appitong sponson and guards. “Elmore” was very fortunate for many years to have had very good owners, Dee and Sarah Meek. They loved her and did amazing things to keep her going, and it showed every time you saw her in person or in a photograph. Unfortunately Elmore has fallen on hard times since being sold in 2019 and is in desperate need of her new caretakers. So much beauty and history here!! But not a small undertaking by any means. I’m anxiously waiting to see what the future has in store for the mighty “Elmore” 🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻
