As Gordon Bethune aptly noted, two decades ago, ‘You can make a pizza so cheap, nobody will eat it. You can make an airline so cheap, nobody will fly it.’

‘WestJet's LOPA Mistake - by Brian Sumers’

The airline made a reasonable bet that passengers would accept very tight seat pitch in exchange for more lower-priced tickets. It failed. Its CEO told me why.

‘Airport lounges are a mainstay of contemporary air travel but are they any better than the lounges of old?’

Isn’t the better question one of root cause?

Why do airport dwell times have to be so long?

Welcome to Lounge World - by Edward Russell

Airport lounges are a mainstay of contemporary air travel but are they any better than the lounges of old?

Airlines are adept at designing and optimizing flight schedules to maximize expected revenue, earnings, and returns on capital within a variety of business constraints.

Airline-optimized schedules are published, chosen by, and sold to the public up to a year in advance of departure.

FAA now states it will demand airlines change schedules ‘days, weeks, or months’ prior to departure, ignoring airlines’ design optimization, ignoring airlines’ overall and real-time, day-of-flight business objectives and constraints, as well as ignoring customer choices.

Despite FAA demanding $31 billion to fund it, that risky new system still fails to recognize or mitigate the root cause, day-of-flight random point overloads, that drive airspace congestion, ATC workload, flight delays.

That is today’s problem, the same as the last several decades' problem, which a cumulative over $100 billion in investments has failed to address or remedy. And that will be the 'brand new ATC system' problem as well.

What airline, what Congress, and what customers should put up with that waste?

Especially when 1000x less expensive -- millions, not billions -- independently proven, commercialized, on-the-shelf options exist.

Why tolerate expensive, risky, 'NeverGen' solutions when proven, more efficient, NowGen solutions exist?

Last night's interview on WGN Chicago, a 50,000 watt 'clear channel' station on which in the 1960s I used to listen to night time Bruins-Blackhawks away games on a home-built Radio Shack crystal radio.

Robert W. Mann Jr., Airline Industry Analyst and Consultant at R.W. Mann & Company, joins Jon Hansen to discuss why air travel will be more expensive this summer.

FAA’s description of their Brand New ATC System solution completely ignores the issue of the continuously changing real-time randomization of 4D flight trajectories, from pre-release through enroute and arrival, not to mention airlines’ optimal schedule designs.

This is a problem that has already been solved by commercially available software, and includes airlines’ ability to system-optimize their own flights’ sequence and timing, as well as FAA’s ability to honest-broker multiple system-optima for a particular space and time to a NAS global optimum.

“FAA can see where flight trajectories could collide and “fix all of that stuff before the planes even leave the ground. That’s using four-dimensional trajectories and machine learning with unlimited compute power to actually manage all these trajectories.”

FAA Administrator Bryan Bedford outlined vision to move FAA into the future

I was honored with the opportunity to present at AGIFORS Barcelona last week, on behalf of Michael Baiada and myself, on the topic of reducing random point airspace overloads, the root cause of ATC intervention and flight delays.

We discuss what contributes to defects in flight outcomes — unproductive scheduled time, excess flying time and costs, poor on-time performance, and its airline profit impact — and who is uniquely capable of most operating and capital cost-efficiently and economically successfully preventing those defects, benefiting airlines, passengers, investors, employees, the economies they serve and grow, literally all constituencies, and how to create a virtuous cycle of improvement.
