Locomotives are big heavy things with big heavy parts, but sometimes require the smallest of repairs.

Several weeks ago on a fairly short 3 hour run we noticed a significant drop in the cooling water level. Upon further inspection we discovered that at some point in decades past a small piece of copper tube that carries cooling water had been replaced with a short section of rubber hose, likely to repair a damaged section. This hose had gotten hard and brittle over the years and finally burst open. Thankfully the loss of cooling water wasn’t severe enough to shut down the locomotive, and crews were able to finish the run and repair the line afterwards. Captions on each photo.

We use simple hand tools like this frequently. They are low cost effective ways to get track maintenance done without large numbers of people or expensive machines.

Looking for something fun to do on this beautiful sunday afternoon? We still have space available on our 3:30 run of the Handcar Tours near Potlatch, ID. Check out this video on the restoration of an original WI&M combine! For decades it was believed this car had been burned to salvage the metal parts after retirement, the fact this car survived and was rediscovered is itself a small miracle. The restoration is museum quality!
