Exploring Budapest: Highlights from Our Recent Trip

Budapest gave us everything: elegance, history, beauty, and just the right amount of old-world drama.

We stayed at the stunning Anantara New York Palace Budapest, where each morning began with breakfast at the iconic New York Café — easily one of the most unforgettable hotel experiences of the trip. From there, we wandered through a city layered with stories and sweeping views: the majestic Hungarian Parliament Building, the moving Shoes on the Danube Bank memorial, the elegant Chain Bridge, the historic Buda Castle, and the breathtaking terraces of Fisherman’s Bastion.

We also made time for St. Stephen’s Basilica and some wonderful shopping at the Great Market Hall, where Budapest’s local flavor really comes to life. And for a deeper look into the city’s past, Steve visited the House of Terror Museum and the Hospital in the Rock Nuclear Bunker Museum — powerful, sobering stops that added real depth to the experience.

Budapest is the kind of destination that stays with you long after you leave. Beautiful, layered, and completely captivating.

Sometimes, low water levels in Europe’s rivers require a few creative tweaks to travel plans—and that’s exactly what happened on our cruise aboard the AmaMagna. Because this ship is twice as wide as typical river cruisers, it could not sail the usual route from Vienna to Budapest since the water levels were too low.

But no worries—AmaWaterways rose to the occasion with style and comfort. For our day trip to Bratislava, we travelled by luxury motor coach, enjoying a beautiful and seamless tour. Then, for our final night onboard, we celebrated with a delightful Captain’s Gala Dinner and reception, savoring exquisite cuisine and excellent service. As the full moon lit the sky, we strolled the upper deck, soaking in the magic of our last evening on the ship.

To conclude our journey, we spent a wonderful night at the stunning Al Habtoor Luxury Hotel in Budapest, complete with a memorable dinner. Throughout it all, every tour and experience remained as remarkable as ever.

With luxury travel, it’s all about flexibility and flawless moments—no matter what the river has in store.

Today’s getaway to Bratislava was a step back in time, wandering ancient cobblestone streets that whisper stories of centuries past. We discovered a charming pharmacy still in operation—its original inlaid wood furnishings and intricate tile mosaic floors perfectly preserved, blending history with everyday life.

Strolling past the historic Jewish quarter, we admired the beautiful towers and churches that punctuate the city skyline, each with its own tale to tell. It was a truly wonderful experience, soaking in the rich culture and timeless charm of this enchanting city.

For travelers craving authenticity and history wrapped in a compact, walkable city—Bratislava is a gem waiting to be explored.

What a day in Vienna! Our city tour took us past the elegant stables where the world famous Lipizzaner horses live like royalty—with fivestar amenities including soothing infrared heat therapy. We saw the building where the President works and learned that the common people of Vienna can rent an apartment on the 2nd and 3rd floors of the building.

Of course, no Viennese afternoon is complete without a visit to our alltime favorite gelato spot, Zanoni & Zanoni, for a delicious and refreshing treat.

Before wrapping up on tour of Vienna, we spotted the Gutenberg statue and couldn’t resist grabbing a photo with Steve's journey mug to commemorate a day full of history, beauty, and indulgence.

In the afternoon we wandered the enchanting gardens of Schönbrunn Palace, where the wisteria is in full bloom—a stunning cascade of purple that feels like stepping into a dream. The palace itself offers a glimpse into imperial grandeur that never gets old. Our tour guides did an excellent job sharing their passion of this beautiful city's history and charm.

This morning, we immersed ourselves in history with a captivating tour of Schallaburg Castle just outside Melk, Austria. Walking through its medieval halls and grand chambers brought centuries of stories to life, making the past feel wonderfully vivid and real. They offer 2 escape rooms and replica armor for fun photo ops!

After exploring the castle’s rich heritage, we strolled through its stunning gardens, alive with vibrant blooms and fragrant herbs. Our morning culminated in a delightful herbal workshop where we crafted our own herbal salts to take home — a perfect blend of history, nature, and creativity.

For those craving an unforgettable European escape filled with culture, hands-on experiences, and natural beauty, Schallaburg Castle should be at the top of your list.

On Tuesday, April 27, 2026, we spent a magical afternoon exploring the charming town of Český Krumlov, Czech Republic. Our journey began with a leisurely walk up to the majestic castle overlooking the winding river and the historic city below—a perfect vantage point to soak in the timeless beauty of this UNESCO World Heritage site.

Strolling through the cobblestone streets, every corner revealed stories of centuries past. Lunchtime found us at the quaint Travellers Inn, where I savored a rich, comforting dish of traditional goulash paired with Carlsbad dumplings. Steve delighted in tender beef with gravy and bread dumplings—a meal as hearty as the town’s history.

Crossing the border into the Czech Republic was fascinating in itself, but what made the experience truly special was our incredible guide, Lucas. Born and raised in Český Krumlov, he shared authentic insights and personal stories that brought this remarkable place vividly to life.

Cesky Krumlov is more than a destination; it’s a journey into living history, culture, and flavor. Stay tuned for more adventures from our unforgettable travels!

April 28, 2026 - Linz, Austria
Our morning tour of the day was to Linz. We walked the historic old town on cobblestone streets and enjoyed learning the history of this small town. The photo with the 2 men and the black elephant is a tribute to the wedding gift given to the Royals - trouble insued, they had never seen an elephant and didn't know what to feed it, so it died 2 weeks later. So sad!

Saturday, April 25-26 2026...ships, cars, planes, cars, trains, cars, ships...lol

We disembarked Explora II, grabbed a taxi and headed to the Barcelona Airport. We flew to Munich, caught taxi number 2 and spent the night at the Hilton Hampton Inn near the train station. Sunday we took an a taxi to the train station, then a train from Munich to Vilshofen and a taxi to the pier where we boarded the AMAMagna for an 8 day river cruise on the Danube.

This is currently the largest river ship and one of a kind! It's twice the width of all other river ships. Our suite is beautiful and very comfortable. We toured Vilshofen after settling in and will sail to Passau on Monday 4/27. Join us on this journey!

Well, that's a wrap. We enjoyed our 17 day cruise on the beautiful Explora II. What an amazing experience. Steve and I attended the talks by visiting Luminaries on different topics throughout our 9 sea days. I took 5 art classes, we loved the very talented musical artists and shows daily. We read, relaxed, slept, went to high tea most afternoons and enjoyed the amazing cuisine! We toured 5 ports all of which were new for Steve and I had only visited Malaga in 2018. We fell in love with the Azores and want to go back someday to spend more time there. We disembarked Saturday 4/25/26 in Barcelona and started on our next adventure...stayed tuned!!!
